Lots of interesting town pronunciations all over this country. "Cairo" is KAY-row in Illinois, too. We have an "It'lee" (Italy) in Texas (just south of Dallas), and a PAL-ess-teen (Palestine). In Missouri, Versailles is ver-SALES.

Yup, if you pronounce it incorrectly they look at you cross eyed and say: yaint from round here is ya boy...

Of course, it is in Maury County (pronounced Murray) so what do you expect?

Speaking of Ooltewah, somewhere around 1981 Prez Reagan stopped by to give one of the local schools an award: pronounced it EwlTEEwah.

It was funny to the locals. I didn't care as I got to see AF 1 and the first guy I got to vote for.

Just as well that none of you live in Wales, then.

My late Aunt Blodwen lived in Tanybwlch, not far from Rhosllanerchrugog, and on the way to her kids in Llanfihaengel-ym-Mochnant by way of Caerestyn.

Thank goodness here in PA we keep it simple and classy with our town names such as Intercourse, Blue Ball and Bird-In-Hand.

I get into it with my kids. I tell them, it's not Count Dra-CU-la, it's Drac-u-la.

My son's response: Yea, well, we're not in Trans-al-va-NE-A.

Hedley Lamarr: Wait, wait, wait. I'm unarmed.
Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists.
Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

The Old Dominion (Virginia) is not without its pronunciation issues.

Norfolk = NAWfuk
Suffolk = Suffuk
Staunton = Stanton

and my favorite

Buena Vista = Byoona Vista

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

Right next the Santa Fe we have Theeta (Theta) as well. Nice area, but it's about as country as you can get.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

tac, I've been to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and sang in a concert in Llandudno (which I did learn to pronounce--the double L is tough, though).

They included Cairo, but left out Vienna. And they left out Buena Vista. (Hint, it's not pronounced like the Spanish words.)

I didn't actually learn the language, tac, just some pronunciation rules. Sorry. (I used an on-line translator for what you wrote--a good one, it appears.)
