First week down! What a whirlwind of a week. Today was the first full day on the floor. I got with my lead man and the powder coat lead and gave them my expectations and that I will be leaning on them heavily until I get the hang of the operation. We were extremely short handed today so I jumped on the line to help/ learn one of the positions with my lead man for half the day and meet the guys that were there. The other half of the day I had some loose ends to tie up and learn some of the programs in place. Of course, I had to give someone shit for standing around already. However, at the end of the day, a few of the guys were hanging out after cleaning up and we got to shoot the breeze for a bit. Everyone said "See ya Monday." so I guess I did alright...

Great! And a bit familiar sounding, too.

Friday afternoon of my first week on the new job, my boss rolled by on his way out and said, "Have a good weekend. Coming back Monday?" Big Grin

God bless America.

It's been a little bit, so I'll give an update. So far this has been an excellent decision to move on from my old job. The upper management here has been very encouraging and have mentioned numerous times that I am doing a great job. This is refreshing and a huge confidence builder. My last job everyone felt unimportant and like a number.

Our production has been ramped up and has been chaotic to say the least. I have been noticing where I am short staffed and asking for team members to fill the gaps with new hires or transfers. I have been interviewing potential candidates with some being hired and internal members beginning to be trained. I am slowly building a stronger team to help meet the production goal. The current employees are getting burned out from the ramp up but I told them the calvary is coming...slowly. We will get through this stronger in the end.

My employees have been opening up to me a bit more with one of them surprising me this week. This team member was written up for not wearing ear plugs in my first week on the floor. Obviously he didn't like it and gave me lip about it, but I have a job to do. Over the next few weeks we talked occasionally, nothing serious, just chit-chat and "hey, good job". Unfortunately there was a death in his family and when he came back to work, I approached him and told him I was sorry for his loss and that if he needed to talk to someone, I was available and that we have counseling available if he needed it. Fast forward to Friday and he was eating lunch at break, I was not as I was running around and hadn't had break yet. He asked if I ate yet.
Nope. Not since 4 a.m..
awe man, ya gotta eat.
I will, eventually.
You know what? I respect you.
I was taken aback and said thank you.
He then says when you came up to me and said that you were sorry for my loss. That hit me, man.
I told him that I am a boss, but I'm human too. I'm not here to be an asshole, that I honestly care and want the best for everyone.
He thanked me again and went back to eating.

Sorry for the rambling, but I wanted to share that story.

We are meeting the goal most days even while being short handed. My guys are great, even though there is resistance at times, but I try to be fair and help them when I can. We are supposed to work 10 hours, but I told them if we hit the goal for the day, we're out of there early. We have been getting out in 8.5- 9 hours. I had to answer a couple times why we left early to my manager, but once I told him, he understood. For the most part, attendance has been better and the goal has been met almost every day, minus the down time issues. We joke around, get the job done, and we say hasta manana to each other.

So, until next update, I'll keep chugging along. I'm averaging between 17,000 and 18,000 steps a day, so no rest for the weary.

That's great news, petr! I'm glad to hear it's going well for you. It sounds like you've got a great team there, and are building really good relationships.

Good stuff, man!

God bless America.
