Like Truman said, “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” I remember a program some years ago, at the Bush 41 Library in College Station, a discussion between Bush 41 and Ted Kennedy. President Bush read some quotes spoken by Sen. Kennedy about Bush, really nasty, mean, hard hitting, and Kennedy was wincing as he heard each one. Yet, there they were, up there jovial, friendly, laughingly putting on this program like old buddies. We’ve seen that between the Clintons and Bushs as well, friendly, at least in public, cooperative. There are two lessons here. I’m not sure which one is more apt. One, if you don’t have a very thick skin, you may be in the wrong business, and probably won’t be in elective office very long, if ever. Two, politics may be a real life version of pro wrestling, where once you have shown you have the chops, you are accepted as a performer, assigned a character, and read into scripts, with the right holds, throws, hollering anguish or triumph, donning the costume, playing the part, spooling up the crowd. After the show, you remove the costumes and make up, and all go out for drinks. Nobody takes it personally in the real game. Only the public and the sports writers weep and wail over the various scenes of the “big show.” Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
