I was walking from the magazines (ashore) to the office one morning and saw a 240B machinegun mounted and unattended on a small boat in the slip of the small boat station that was co-located with several units. I waited a few minutes thinking the person was on the boat and inside..but nope. So I walked over, dismounted it, walked into the office and called the OINC of the small boat station to come visit me. Told him it was urgent. And he came over, I explained who’s machine gun it was and where I got it. We took it apart and took it to his unit and re assembled it on his desk. He then let the panic take its course when said boatswains mate realized the gun was gone. We didn’t burn anyone, but it was a great learning experience for PO2/E5.
