Need to get some new cold weather gloves. Took the pup outdoor for a walk in 2 degree weather and my hands were absolutely in pain when I got back. This is from a pair of Cabela's branded thinsulate and Gore-Tex gloves that have served me well over the years. And today was even with wearing ArcTeryx merino wool glove liners.

Yes, first world problems of living in the Great White North...

When it's really cold, I prefer mittens. I use mittens & gloves designed fo skiing. Putting a hand warmer inside helps quite a bit too.

I haven't tried any yet but I'm shopping for heated gloves for hunting season. I bought a pair of heated socks on Amazon for 20 bucks not expecting them to do anything but was pleasantly surprised. It was 25 this morning and I won't say my toes were warm at all but they were more comfortable than with chemical toe heaters. I'll try better ones next season and will have some gloves too.

Mittens with possible wool glove liners. You know from the type of work you do that even a slight case of frostbite is nothing to take for granted. Once bit it doesn"t take much to go farther. Been there / done that / got the tee shirt. Spent 4 sub-sub zero winters at Ft. Greely / US ARMY Cold Regions Test Center / Delta junction, Alaska and 1 winter in Fairbanks, Alaska. Be safe. ............................................. drill sgt.

It is also possible your circulation is not as good as it once was.

This is a big possibility, at 63 I have noticed that I have to dress way differently than past years.

The ONLY gloves that keep my fingers a little bit warm are electric gloves. Bought a pair a few years ago and use them in the winter when snow shoveling or plowing with the tractor.
Still wish I could find a pair that the warming wires coiled around the fingers instead just loop on the back of the fingers.

At close to zero F I'd be looking at something electric. I've gotten all my 12v motorcycle gear and the battery powered stuff from The Warming Store. I prefer Gerbings, but there are other brands out there that get good reviews.

Gerbings sold out and then was upset with how the quality went to shit and started a new company named Gordons to put out quality heated gear

I'm aware that the new Gerbings is name only, but the current company has a lifetime warranty on their products. As to went to shit, I've been upgrading my almost 30 year old stuff and can say the new stuff works better due to the switch from single wire to metal and carbon fibre mesh technology. I'm not sure the new Gordon's os worth twice what I payed for my new Gerbings.

FOUR winters in Delta Junction??? My hat is off (briefly so my ears don't freeze) to you. I spent two winters in Fairbanks at Ft Wainwright, Dec 1968 - May 1970.

After 30 years of ice climbing and mountaineering - I opt for mittens in extreme cold. If you can find really warm gloves that allow you to tie the laces on your boots - buy 5 pairs of them. Otherwise - get a good glove liner and warm mittens.

I know I’m a light strike on this subject, but my fingers loved my old L.L. Bean fleece lined three finger mittens on hunting trips out west and sometimes even now here in Texas.

And once again, I think Imay be going overboard and seriously considering ordering a pair of these...

http://www.timberadobeavermitts.com/beaver_mens.html^^^^^^^^^ My friend GO FOR IT. One of the advantages of these type/style of mittens is by using the backside of you hand then you can give you face some relief from the wind/ blowing snow , etc.. Problem is they smear the snot cicles. And a neck string that goes around your neck with the end attached to each mitten so you can shake one off to do something with your hand so mitten does not get lost or drop on ground/mud/snow. Like someone I know (not me) went into a outdoor unheated privy and used the mittens for padding between their bottom side and the seating area. When they stood up the mitten was not attatched and it dropped into the deposit hole. Outside temperature was in excess of -50*F . He was lucky as we found a replacement............................... drill sgt.

FWIW, I'm in WI, not AK, but I have a pair of Burton snowboarding gloves with separate fleece liner gloves.

The cuff extends well past the wrist, and has an elastic cinch to seal out air or snow. Have zippered pockets
on the back of the hand for hand warmer packets.

Served me well during the polar vortex a couple years ago. Nothing like going out in -30 wind chill for
10 minutes every two hours to start the car (so it could barely start again).

But, WI winter vs AK...

Cheap at twice the price! Normally it costs much more to slip your hand into some fuzzy beaver..... Wink

www.Carthart.com

Their insulated, water proof gloves are great for 20 degree below weather

But are too warm for anything warmer.

Have had mine for three years.

Holding on to a leash, snow blower or shovel is fine, just fine

But anything that requires more dexterity is going to be a challenge.
