We just did a major remodel including a lot of plumbing upgrades and a new kitchen. My son in law is a master plumber and I contracted his company to do the plumbing work. One of the first things he told me was that if I insist on having a garbage disposal in the kitchen to hire a different company as he will not install one. He hates them because they are the root of a lot of plumbing problems but they also make his company a lot of money due to service calls. My experience is that they are susceptible to operator error, not the disposal. The more powerful disposers do a great job of chewing up food, but too much food, without adequate water flow is a recipe for a plugged drain. If one considers what they are putting down, and how fast they are feeding it with the water, most problems can be averted. _________________________________________________ "Once abolish the God, and the Government becomes the God." --- G.K. We went through 2 of them in less than 3 years. Got our first one based on the number of people here, that had good things to say about them. In a little less than a year it started leaking out the bottom. The company sent out a new one in just a couple days. That one didn’t make it 2 years, and it started leaking out the bottom too. I don’t feel like we abused either one of them. It’s a pisser when you go to get something from under the sink, and it’s all wet. We ended up going back to the old standby brand. I don’t think we’ve ever had one that wasn’t at least 15 years old when it gave up.

A quality unit, properly installed should give no more trouble than any other appliance. Having installed dozens, I can tell you that problems arises mostly with the cheap underpowered "contractor" units. I put a Maytag in my old house in 1979... Daughter's house now, it's still in regular use with never an issue of any kind. Now when asked, I recomend a 1HP Waste King or Insinkerator. Endeavor to persevere.

#1 on Waste Kang. Just run the water and run it long enough. All tend to clog up if you don't. FYI, my wife had a great idea last time I installed one. She used a small bottle jack to easily hold it in place while connecting the fittings.
