Had GE profile for 19 years without any repairs. Gave to church when we remodeled. Currently have a Bosch as GE's replacement (2yrs old), and Whirlpool (10 yrs old) as overflow. GE and Whirlpool are top freezer. Bosch is bottom freezer. Top freezers are generally your most efficient and long-lasting. I do like upper french-doors on the Bosch. Nice to have fridge items at eye-level, and no giant fridge door sticking out 3 ft. when opened.

Whirlpool, Kitchenaid and Maytag are all the same company now.

We remodeled our kitchen last year and went with all Kitchenaid - double oven, cooktop, refrigerator and dishwasher.
Well, almost all Kitchenaid.

We ordered everything six months ahead of time.
The remodel started late, and after about nine months the Kitchenaid refrigerator was still not even being produced.
The identical Whirlpool version of it was available immediately, so we switched that.
They put Kitchenaid handles on it so everything would match (service like that is why I buy appliances at a local, independently owned appliance store rather than Home Depot, etc.).

It makes no sense why the same refrigerator was available only with the Whirlpool tag on it.

Bought a Fisher Paykil an unknowing mistake. After about 5 service calls and using my camping cooler for a month they finally said it was unfixable and returned our money.

My basic GE Profile bottom freezer is now 21 years old and works as well as when new. No broken shelves or drawers and no servicing other than me vacuuming it out underneath every 6 months or so.

Unfortunately with appliances our good (or bad) experience with a brand purchased 15-20 years ago will have no correlation to the quality that the same brand is manufacturing today.

I've had very little experience with side by sides but we've had a fridge with the freezer on the bottom for about 20 years... spent the last 3 weeks at the beach in a rental house with a standard fridge with the freezer on the top... what a pain in the butt... you literally have to get down on the floor to get stuff out of the bottom trays and shelf.
