If I take someone a new torque converter and the Sonnax billet torque converter upgrade kit, how much should I expect to pay for them to cut it open swap out the supplied internals, and weld on the new billet cover?

Unfortunately that is out of my price range. I am trying to head of buying another vehicle and/or stopping a catastrophic transmission failure.

I used these guys to rebuild the torque converter for my 66 Mustang. Quality work. Don’t remember price but give them a shout.

I used Precision Industries for my Mustangs higher stall performance converter. It was pretty expensive but it was for a performance improvement. I’m not sure if they do what you are wanting or not. It might be worth an email.

I’m not sure what it will cost, but I would think that most places that build torque converters aren’t going to want to start replacing parts with someone else’s parts. You might be better off just buying a complete converter that is already built to handle the torque. I had a triple disc suncoast that was extremely hard on input shafts, then I went with a single disc from ProTorque and couldn’t have been happier. It held up just fine with an 8000lb truck in the 700hp range.

People take parts to automotive shops all the time.

I have taken GM parts to a GM dealership before. They charge 2X the cost of the parts, for the same parts. They will install and warranty these parts. They will also install non-GM parts but will not warranty them.

Yup but the performance people I deal with charge extra to deal with them and often won't warranty the work. Small exception sometimes for something they cannot get. Its a tradeoff and you have to look at the cost/benefit.,

I still think buying a complete converter from a reputable company will get you a much better product.
In order to use these Sonnax parts on a stock converter, you’re going to have to find a converter shop that is willing to cut yours open. I’m pretty sure that most shops are not going to have the tools or the know how to build you a converter that you will be happy with. A small change in the stall speed of the converter can greatly affect the drivability. I’ve broken my share of parts, and there’s nothing worse than doing things twice.

I've never used them but I'd call this place, he seems to be real good and fixes other "built" transmissions that fail.

Transmission shop

These folks rebuild torque converters all the time. Most of the off the shelf billet converters are performance based and $1200-$1400.

I have found one so far that is more for the stock application just with the billet parts and keeps the 1800 stall which is a MUST as you have pointed out.

Problem is these folks want my core ahead of time or an extra $450. Mine is still rolling and this is just preemptive since these factory 6L80 and 6L90 torque converter are known to implode and take out the rest of that transmission. Can’t have the tuck down that long.
Need to have the new unit ready to roll the day we pull the transmission.

PATC is a reputable company. Are they local to you? Shipping converters isn’t cheap. How much is the rebuild kit from Sonnax? I didn’t see pricing on their site. Do you get a refund of the $450 core charge if you send your converter back? If not, then maybe get a core for less from a junkyard to send in.

No, they are not local.
Guess, I need to call them but the way I am reading the website you have to send the converter in first makes no mention of the $450 being refundable.

A new GM converter is $350 and the Sonnax kit is $215. So $565 in parts. Would like to stay local so I don’t have to pay shipping on a converter both ways.

Fortunately (Knocking on wood very hard) I have never had to have any automatic transmission work done. So I have no clue how much to expect for a converter build labor.
Don’t know of the good place to go yet either so trying to get an idea of what cost should be for labor.

Obviously the best bet is to find a good local converter builder to save on shipping. If shipping is required, most converter shops will hit you with a core charge that gets refunded once you ship the old converter back after the swap. Where are you located?

Just talked with Fred the converter builder at PATC.
Said shipping is $40-$60 so not a huge deal. So still under $800 for a converter. He uses this Sonnax parts.
Figure I’ll go with that and know I am dealing with high quality folks than trying local and maybe getting high quality.
