Anyone buy a gun from the PX/military exchange? Login/Join

I have base and PX access and recently saw an ad for a few rather decent deals for guns. My state also loves to punish us 2a folks and so they stack lots of taxes for transfers etc on top of that which it seems like the PX avoids as I dont pay sales tax at the very least.

Has anyone bought a gun at the PX and if so, what is the process like besides the obvious do the forms and comply with basic state regulations for the bases location? I am a vet but not retired if that makes a difference.

Decades ago I bought a SKS from the BX. Just the normal 4473. That was it.

Pretty easy when I used to buy in Maryland. I still had to abide by the states laws for taking ownership but all I had to show was orders, home state ID and fill out paperwork.

I've purchased a few guns from my local exchange. The process is no different than buying off-base/post. The only thing they have you do is sign some silly nonsense forms (locally generated) that says you will leave the base withing 15 mins of completing the purchase, not make any stops between the PX/BX and the gate. It's silly and stupid "feel good policy" that isn't enforced--it's not like they have MP/Security Forces waiting to escort you from the BX.

Oh--this has happened every time. Even though I've completed a background check, apparently I can't walk from the gun counter to the front door of the store. An employee has to carry it to the threshold of the door...after that, they hand the case to you and you're free to leave. More silly military nonsense.

I've had no problems with the couple I've bought at the Fort Leavenworth PX. Not any great deals, except for the sales tax savings making it worthwhile in a few instances. The "walking you to the door" is annoying, but Bass Pro/Cabela's and a few other of the large chain outdoor stores have the same policy.

Might be an anti-shoplifting procedure. i.e., any non-employee carrying a gun case to the door is a suspected shoplifter.

Back in the 80’s I bought a German Bankers PPK/S for $225 and a CZ75 for $187. Both at the Rhein-Main sportsman Club. Went back a few months later and got an FN Hi-Power. Forgot how much that was. All we needed back then was the A/C signature on the custom form. Glory days.

If you can wait a few weeks they usually have a pretty good discount on guns for about 2 weeks between Veterans Day and black Friday. It is 10% off plus another 10% off if you use their Military Star card (store credit card).

I have not, however I have a good friend in TX that is retired Army and buys them there, in fact he messaged that he's picking one up this week for those very reasons such as no tax...

If I could I would not hesitate to do so...

I’ve purchased a couple from our BX here at DMAFB over the years; same thing as others have described —- an employee carries your purchase to the door with you. Otherwise just like any other gun shop except no sales tax. Sometimes that difference is the only pricing advantage outside of a sale. They can special order as well.
