In a press conference on Wednesday, Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson told homeowners they are “more than welcome to shoot” at burglars as he announced the arrest of Brandon Harris, who Johnson described as being one of the “frequent flyers” breaking into local homes.

You aren’t just more than welcome to stand your ground, it’s actually preferred if you do, Johnson stated.

From Wednesday’s press conference:

quote:
“If somebody’s breaking into your house, you’re more than welcome to shoot them in Santa Rosa County, and we prefer that you do actually.”

Shooting at criminal intruders doesn’t have to end with someone dying or even getting injured, as was the case with ending Harris’ crime spree. In this incident, a homeowner shot at Harris, spooking him and causing him to run to another house where he was eventually captured. However, the homeowner who fired the warning shot has refused to come forward, even to the police, despite their attempts to get in contact, likely because they fear they did something wrong.

But that’s not the case, according to Sheriff Johnson, who made his Wednesday remarks with the homeowner in mind. Before this latest string of break-ins, Harris had been arrested 17 times since the age of 13 and had been sent to prison for six-and-a-half years for home invasion.

Describing Harris, Johnson said:

quote:
“Some people just don’t learn. For us, he is job security. We deal with him all the time. Hopefully, this time he will go, and he won’t get out.”

In the end, Johnson praised the homeowner who scared Harris away with warning shots and even extended an invitation for them to attend local gun safety classes in order to brush up on their aim:
quote:
“We don’t know what homeowner shot at him.

I guess they think they did something wrong, which they did not.

Whoever that was, you’re not in trouble. Come see us. We have a gun safety class we put on every other Saturday, and if you take that, you’ll shoot a lot better, and hopefully, you’ll save the taxpayers money.”

It does sound harsh, but it would be effective. (Especially if the shooters were better shots.)

Maybe present a few boxes of ammo and a handshake every week, to obliging homeowners.

This is my sheriff. I actually live in Santa Rosa County FL and there are only 2 incorporated cities in the county that have a city PD. One is far away from me 20+ miles and the other is a few miles away. And pretty small department. The rest is patrolled by the sheriff. From the beaches all the way to the Alabama border. ~200k people. The sheriff from what I have seen is a good man and his department is very decent. The other thing is this county is way, way red. I would be shocked if every home doesn’t have a gun, at least a shotgun

Yeah, it was in Pace. Both Pace and Milton have a lotta meth crap going on.

Lived in the panhandle for 50 years. (USAF Anchored)

Lived in Navarre for a few years.
Lots of good people in the Panhandle.

A lot has changed with large influx of people ramping up in the 90s.

I’m in Pace. Northwestern end almost to chumuckla. These burglaries were south of 90 behind the Lowes.
Definitely some neighborhoods that are methy. And some shady characters along the main drag down there. Im about 7 miles north of Hiway 90. I’m over a mile down a dead end road very will lit a very thick woods behind all our houses. There are several turn off streets with other houses before you get to us so coming all the way as far as my house on accident is not likely. But I’m still wary. Overall a very nice town where we are

That seems a bit extreme given a lot of how things go around the country. However, I’ve thought more than once that if folks could deal harshly with people who get out of line and get a pat on the back for said dealing instead of getting charged, there’d be a lot less folks getting out of line…

I live in rural Santa Rosa. This is my Sheriff, I know him and he is a cops' cop. He has a background in Air Force police and in SWAT and as an instructor in various martial skills. We are fortunate to have a no nonsense Sheriff and a first rate Sheriff's Department. You would be hard pressed to find a home without a gun and a veteran inside in this county, and the judges will put burglars away. Burglary is a highly hazardous vocation out here. Shooting burglars reduces burglaries.

Just the Sheriff’s comments should cause the bad guys to rethink their life choices.

Doesn’t sound like it. Didn’t the Sheriff say that this one individual is providing the police with job security?
quote:

Before this latest string of break-ins, Harris had been arrested 17 times since the age of 13 and had been sent to prison for six-and-a-half years for home invasion.

Describing Harris, Johnson said:

I can see cops making statements like the Sheriff’s out of frustration at having to deal with the same people repeatedly. Must drive you crazy as a cop.

Maybe I am reading this wrong but are you saying it is extreme to shoot an intruder/burglar in your house???
Because that is exactly what will happen to someone in my home who is not supposed to be there and I am very much protected from legal and civil litigation if so by state statute.
