That seems a bit extreme given a lot of how things go around the country. However, I’ve thought more than once that if folks could deal harshly with people who get out of line and get a pat on the back for said dealing instead of getting charged, there’d be a lot less folks getting out of line…

Maybe I am reading this wrong but are you saying it is extreme to shoot an intruder/burglar in your house???
Because that is exactly what will happen to someone in my home who is not supposed to be there and I am very much protected from legal and civil litigation if so by state statute.

There is a presumption built into Florida use of force law chapter 776 that you are in fear of death or great bodily harm if someone forcibly enters your occupied residence or vehicle, AND that the person forcibly entering intends a crime of violence. Also the homicide statute 782.02 makes it justifiable homicide if you use deadly force against someone trying to murder you, or commits a felony against you or in your home. And lastly, deadly force is justifiable if you are stopping one of the enumerated forcible felonies listed in 776.08, and burglary is one of the listed forcible felonies. Also, if use of force is justified under 776, you are immune from prosecution or civil liability in state courts. So there is plenty legal justification for shooting burglars. Whether one SHOULD is a judgement call.

I visited Crestview in the late 1970s with a siting crew for one of the Solid Shield exercises. We sited a mobile radar on the Crestview airport. As I recall, the Army Corps of Engineers removed a lot of trees in the NW corner of the airfield (with approval of the owner) so that our radar coverage would be better. For that exercise we also sited radars at Marianna, Bonifay, and Defuniak Springs (plus 3 larger radars in Alabama, north of the Florida panhandle).

Back to the thread topic, I approve of your Sheriff and his staff. They appear to be solid Americans.

I took a zoom class here in NJ from an attorney who gives advice to non-LEO gun owners in this state. NJ is nothing like Texas when it comes to gun laws. (no surprise)

If someone is trying to break in but has NOT yet made entry into your home, his advice was to warn the person that you are armed and tell them to leave. If they continue to try to break in, he said it was a bad idea to shoot the dirt bag before he has made entry into your home. If you wait until they actually are inside to discharge your weapon, you'll be in a better position legally in this criminal friendly state.

I'd prefer not to ever have to shoot someone, or even at them, but if I do, I want a Sheriff like this running things where I live.
