I got to go fishing today...
Finally caught something besides river weeds last night! About 7" overall.

I got to watch a fawn chew on some leaves for a while, too.

God bless America.

Ditch the snap swivel. Learn a loop knot for lures and the palomar knot for hooks. Texas rig plastic baits that mimic whatever the fish in that river eat. Crayfish are probably a good bet, so the Berkley PowerBait Craw Fatty on a 3/0 or 4/0 offset EWG hook. Done right, and it’s really easy, it will be weedless. The hook is going to look huge, but that’s ok.

Treble hooks are awesome for catching weeds and sticks and trees and…

You’ll be catching bigger bass in no time.

Long ago my old police partner would go fishing around Amarillo, TX at a prairie dog town. He would set up a lawn chair with umbrella, fishing pole and line with steel leader around mouth of prairie dog hole. He would sit back with a cold drink and wait until prairie dog poked his head up and the fight was on. He said funniest part about it was people driving by and seeing him sitting in chair with fishing pole and no water around, ha.

Way to go, vthoky!
Look up Green Pumpkin Senkos. That’s what the smallies over on our side of the border go crazy for. Keep getting out there!

The lady who owns our local surplus store fishes a good bit, and she stocks a ton of lures and gear.
The shop is right down the road from work. I'll drop in after while and see if she's got 'em. Thank you for the recommendation!

God bless America.

Well, now I've got a project. (As if I need more....)

A friend at work gave me a pair of rod/reel combos this morning -- he's got about 40 of them, I believe. Those are something new to try out. I've not used the open-face style before, but I managed a few successful casts in his back yard.

In addition, though, he gave me a handful of older rod/reel setups that were given to him a while back. These things are OLD! We laughed that some of them might be older than the two of us put together. There's at least one Pflueger fly reel in the bunch. It's way old, but doesn't look terrible.

I'm looking forward to getting into this pile a little and seeing what I've actually got. I'll post pics of the really interesting stuff.

VNM: I did find the Green Pumpkin Senkos this morning> I saw some Berkley Craws, too, but they weren't the Craw Fatty that trapper189 mentioned.

Looking forward to Tuesday!

God bless America.

So! It's a year later... finally got a half-day float in.

I got together with four friends from work and we hit the river at 7am. We caught a dozen or so, nothing fantastic, but the time on the river was great.

Wildlife spottings today included a raccoon on its own fishing journey, a batch of ducklings, a couple of herons and cormorants, and a pair of beavers.

God bless America.

A Medalist, right? 1494? 1495? My first fly reel, in the sixties. It was a very decent, affordable reel. Was one of the rulers of the roost in its day. Still a usable reel, even with all the higher-tech offerings today. An older one is a handsome reel.

I'm not sure if it's a Medalist. I'll go look in a moment. It's almost something one could hang on a wall -- As poorly as I fish, I'd be a heck of a poser doing that! Razz

Looks like a good time. I miss fishing. My fondest memories are of feeding the frogs and napping on the river bank.

It's got 1195 marked on it, but I don't see anything that says Medalist.

This area truly is beautiful. Every time I've looked at relocating I've ended up thinking, "sure would be nice if (there) was so much like here." And so I stay. Mountains, lakes, rivers... all within easy distance. Loving it here.

And thank you again for the small pack you gave me a while back. I'ts perfect for keeping "the essentials Wink " handy while out.

God bless America.

A nice day on the river, enjoying nature, then a stop at Publix on the way home to buy some fish, already cleaned and ready to cook.

Can't beat that with a stick!

i've been fishing on and off for 50 years, never once have I been disappointed in the day or night I've spent doing it even if I got skunked. I'm in it for the boat ride or being out in nature. Catching a fish is a bonus.
