Is that the same vessel that is lacking flight deck ready planes? Also, aren't their carrier based planes so heavy they run out of gas within 21 minutes of takeoff?

Big ship, but based on Russian architecture and designed in 1979 and the hull was laid down in 1985. The sister ship, the Admiral Koznetsof was laid down in 1982, and has broken down so frequently that it sails with two tugs.

Doesn't look as though it carries very many aircraft and its height doesn't seem to support a hanger.

She has a hangar, but only the rear 2/3 or so. The front third (in the Soviet/Russian Navy, at least) is occupied by very large anti-ship missiles. . .

It takes more than a big ship to be versed in carrier ops.

That's the Liaoning (Type 001), which is the former Soviet, then Ukraine carrier. Considering it was an uncompleted hulk before purchase, the missile tubes in the deck are likely removed as the PLAN isn't using their carrier as a missile launcher. They'll use this carrier as a test bed to develop operational practices and attempt to develop their naval aviation. Break out the lawn chairs and popcorn for that one, their current J-15 fighter can only carry a small fraction of it's rated ordinance load-out.

They recently launched their first home built carrier which is the Shandong (Type 001A). Similar to the Liaoning, it's heavier with a number of changes. The next two carriers, Type 002 is supposed to be a CATOBAR set-up, using EMALS cats, that'll be interesting. Carrier number-5, Type 003 is listed as being nuclear powered. Keels have been laid for these next three ships.

Its one thing to build these big ships, it's another thing entirely to run it, have the assets to utilize it, and then have all the supporting assets and infrastructure. Will be interesting to see if the Army (PLA) starts throwing a tantrum with so much funding going into the PLAN, as they've launched something like 30 ships in the last 2-years.

Its their USS Langley. Test bed. And remember it takes multiple carriers to keep even one in an operational state.

All I see is an artificial reef should this thing ever opt to tangle with a 'real' carrier group.

Wasn't there a discussion a few years back from some Navy guys here who watched a clip of PLA Navy carrier ops and it looked like they had copied Top Gun for all their moves?

That thing would get utterly wrecked by a US Navy carrier battle group, everyone knows this. However, the Chinese aren't stupid and they will someday figure out Naval Aviation. Then they'll be even more dangerous.

Back in 2011, Chinese state TV produced a news story about the PLA Air Force, but spliced in some footage from Top Gun and tried to pass it off as live Chinese training footage.

THIS one ship and her 'air group' are not a viable threat against a first world power. It really isn't supposed to be.

This is the $100 Huffy kid's bike with training wheels. They will almost certainly gain experience with carrier air so they can become a threat a generation or two from now.

I don't know if that's possible, and I have two reasons why I don't believe it is.

1. They have a communism problem. Everyone is constantly reporting how amazing everything is, and how well the work was done, to their superiors. It doesn't matter if the work is actually excellent or even completed. Sure, there's retribution when failure happens, but because there's no intrinsic drive for excellence, and only a push for excellence via threat of punishment or imprisonment, I would find it hard to believe that they'll ever achieve anything of note. (Especially once they can't steal any more US tech.)

2. The Chinese people, especially the "baby-boomerish" generations have a saying: mei ban fa.

Roughly translated (someone can correct me) it means "There's nothing to be done."

Basically, their culture is almost completely infused with this. If something is broken, or in need of repair, and it is at all outside of your wheelhouse or assigned job/task, you shrug and say, "Mei ban fa."

A tree falls in the street? Mei ban fa.
A truck knocks over a pole? Mei ban fa.
A storm knocks over a shed or part of a building? Mei ban fa.
The light burns out on your house or at the park? Mei ban fa.

It's quite pervasive.

I'm not saying we shouldn't prepare for a Chinese threat, I'm just not so sure that they're creating a culture or military capable of any kind of warfare excellence.

I am by no means a Chinese expert though.
