JASPER COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) – Monkeys used for animal testing were shot and killed after a truck carrying them overturned in Mississippi on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened on I-59 near mile marker 117, which is north of Heidelberg, Mississippi.
The truck was carrying Rhesus monkeys to a testing facility in Florida from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.
nitial information from the sheriff’s office said the monkeys were said to be carrying hepatitis C, herpes and COVID. They were described as 40 pounds and “aggressive” to humans, requiring personal protective equipment to handle.
Officials said if the monkeys left the wreck site, they must be shot.
Initially, the sheriff’s office said all the monkeys escaped the truck, and all but one of them were shot. However, in an updated post, the sheriff’s office said “several” monkeys were still on the loose as of Tuesday afternoon.
However, Tulane University disputed information about the monkeys having infectious diseases.
Tulane University released the following statement:
“Non-human primates at the Tulane National Biomedical Research Center are provided to other research organizations to advance scientific discovery. The primates in question belong to another entity and are not infectious. We are actively collaborating with local authorities and will send a team of animal care experts to assist as needed.”
Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries is also on site with local law enforcement.

Where were they carrying them to? And shit, I would be pissed off and aggressive, too, if someone interfered with the job I was doing.

Why go North on I-59 from New Orleans to Florida?
Seems like I-10 would have been the chosen route.

Well it looks like some of them made it to Florida without getting killed or caught and are having fun in the sun!

Perhaps some of the monkeys were driving and wanted to stop in Birmingham?

It would really be funny if the driver of the truck could not speak English and got his license from California

I want to know where the "hepatitus-B, herpes, and covid" came from. Of course Tulanes says... These monkeys most definitely do not have hepatitus-B, herpes, or covid. Whatchu talkin bout Willis?
