Stupid Allergy |
My family and I are traveling to Jackson Hole for the week on October 8th, and I just found out my Achilles tendon is torn! I can’t catch much of a break health wise lately. Anyway… I was simply going to ask for suggestions on restaurants, things to see and do, but I’m wondering if we need to rent a vehicle now since I’m in one of these Herman Munster boots for 6 weeks?? I can walk ok, but walking for several blocks and or being on it all day will get difficult. Lay it on me guys, I need suggestions. "Attack life, it's going to kill you anyway." Steve McQueen...

I did Yellowstone and Jackson Hole/Tetons back in 2020. Middle of Covid. Since most food was closed in Yellowstone we ate like crap. Got to Jackson Hole and ate like kings. Jackson Hole is expensive. Two amazing restaurants we ate at that I can recommend are Trio and Gaither. We didn't mind spending a little on nice meals after basically eating lunch meat sandwiches in Yellowstone for days. Also, check out New West Knife Their Teton Edge chef knife is very cool. We hiked the Tetons every day we were there and then chilled in the downtown area after. I would recommend some hikes but sounds like that's a no-go. Some of the hikes there are no joke but amazing views. If you have any questions ask away. There are a few cool spots for sunset/sunrise pictures. One very famous but I can't think of the name. It's a barn with the Tetons in the background. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. This will be the theme for your entire visit in Jackson. Beautiful place, but be prepared for “sticker shock”. "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Very good, thanks for the input. I’ve never been to Jackson Hole, I guess I’m trying to get an idea of the town. I mean, take Telluride, CO for example. I’d be ok walking around there with this injury.. but Jackson looks quite a bit bigger. My elderly mom is going with us, but she’s in great shape. We won’t be doing any real hiking unfortunately, just chilling and taking in the scenery. I’m assuming there’s some type of public transportation or trolly? The central, touristy part of the town is not as big as you think. In my one time there on an overnight, I don’t recall public transportation/trolly being present. Sorry that happened to you. Lunch or supper at The Bird, just a bit S of Jackson. They have really good bar food, but also specialize in German fare and beers. The Bunnery in town for breakfast. The Wort Hotel is a good place for lunch. What a bummer that your Achilles is torn, but there should still be a couple places you can drive to. Maybe you can still get up on Signal Mountain in October for some nice views of the valley. Schwabacher Landing might still be accessible along the Snake River, and who knows…if you go to Jackson Lake Lodge you may be able to spot the Hollywood Bear, #399 from the viewing area there. _______________________________________________________ despite them

Thanks TMats, I was hoping you’d chime in. Sounds like we need to rent a vehicle for sure. "Attack life, it's going to kill you anyway." Steve McQueen...

Public transit isn’t really a thing. Downtown, you’d be fine to walk. It’s a 10-15 minute walk around the square normally. I’d still rent a car. If it’s not too late to change, I’d suggest flying into Idaho Falls and taking the drive up to Jackson. @ 2hrs drive. I’d recommend Melvin Brewing in Alpine, an hour ish from Jackson. Good burgers. The GunBarrel Steakhouse in Jackson serves wild game, bison, elk etc. The Wort is cool, and stick your head in at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. It is touristy and so the customer service is generally not very good. I’d stay out of the Snake River Brewery for example unless it’s slow. The Moose-Wilson road has reported to have a lot of black bear sightings this past week. It’s nice little road with a fair amount of gravel but passable by car. It may close if the they think the bears are getting stressed or it becomes dangerous. It is cooling off now as well. Bring a jacket and have fun! Do not send me to a heaven where there are no dogs. There used to be a great sourdough breakfast place downtown but I think it moved near the local airport. https://www.menuism.com/restau...dough-jackson-294117

Telluride and Jackson Hole are very similar in that the are big ski resorts. Each town has their “ main” street with restaurants, etc. Jackson sits near the southern entrance to Yellowstone/Tetons. Jackson Hole airport is very small, walk on tarmac small. There are a number of adventure guides that offer trips into Yellowstone, fly fishing, etc. I’ve done winter trips to Jackson - always book a snow mobile tour into Yellowstone.

There’s a cowboy bar in downtown that has saddles to sit on at the bar. Kind of a novelty… but worth a visit. ------------------ Eddie Our Founding Fathers were men who understood that the right thing is not necessarily the written thing. -kkina

Hand fire pizza was our favorite place, so much so that we went twice. And we’re not big pizza people, it was just great. Really sorry to hear about your injury. The Jets are going to miss you but I’m sure you’ll be back and as good as ever!

Not sure (never been there) but I'd expect the summer tourist season should be pretty much over by October and the ski season not started yet. If so, maybe the service and prices will be a little better?

No More Mr. Nice Guy |
I flew in/out of there about a thousand times, and had many overnights in Jackson. Get a window seat for the flights. Jackson is 100% tourist, but in a good way. Embrace the western mountain cowboy vibe! I agree you will want a car. You should be able to see a lot of wildlife. The main square is the hub. Flat and not big. Plenty of shops to wander around in. There are quite a few walking trails that are pretty flat. Check out Jenny Lake and of course Yellowstone. It may be too early but there is an elk refuge between town and the airport. Thousands of elk come down for the winter. If they are running the tours be sure to do it. Over at the ski area there will be restaurants. If the tram is running it would be worth doing. At the top there isn't a lot of walking except for the ridgeline iirc. I've skied it but not been there in the summer. There may be snow on top, we've already had snow here in Utah.
