DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Thanks to a reworked menu and long hours, Jeannie Kim managed to keep her San Francisco restaurant alive during the coronavirus pandemic.

That makes it all the more frustrating that she fears her breakfast-focused diner could be ruined within months by new rules that could make one of her top menu items — bacon — hard to get in California.

“Our number one seller is bacon, eggs and hash browns,” said Kim, who for 15 years has run SAMS American Eatery on the city’s busy Market Street. “It could be devastating for us.”

At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.

Are there business who like to bend backwards for California? Simple solution is to stop selling your products to them. If you charge a CA production fee to the price and slap a copy of the voter ballot on every box you send them.

Restaurant owners also need to provide a copy of the ballot to the customers and remind them why the price is so high.

No more bacon? Christ on a crutch. That's a bridge too far.

First there will be local compliant producers. it will be expensive. And then there will be the bootleg bacon.

Given the large east Asian population in CA and the fact that pork is a primary dietary staple, I think this might backfire a little.

That can't be right ~ there needs to be a Bacon Amendment to the Constitution.

Can California just be its own country separate from the United States of America?

Right now, Andrew Cuomo is sitting in his office, feeling antiquate and insecure, wondering what similar legislation he can ram though as to not be left behind.

Screw California. Stop voting for people who craft bad policy. Otherwise I will continue to assume you want this.

I actually think this was a voter referendum. More a matter of ignorant voters voting on a feel good measure with no thought to actual consequences. Does a pig with an extra 2 square feet of space feel better about getting slaughtered for pork products?

We deserve everything we get.

This isn't just bacon.

Breakfast Sausage, Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Bratwurst, most Hot Dogs, many German Sausages, Pork Chops, Pork Tenderloin, Lots of Chinese food - pork fried rice, sweet and sour pork, etc.

Lets just see how the public reacts to this.

Bacon disappears in California all the time, then, it later reappears as state government.

I don't think most people understand how much pork is in food products. If voters passed it overwhelmingly then they can reap what they sew.

Let them eat Turkey Bacon! {shudders}
