At high temperature, butter and sugar left on the oven interior can make a fireplace look dim. Smoke detectors go off. Fire departments come. It's all very exciting.

Now, to the SF experts, how would you remove the hard smear of butter and sugar on my new LG oven interior?

I have read and attempted the various baking soda and vinegar methods. I do not want to attempt the scratch-free scotchbrite pads, nor the magic eraser. I have removed some of the residue by slowing heating and wiping it off with a microfiber towel.

Does the "nuclear" self-cleaning method work? Or, does it just bake the residue into a diamond-like coating forever staring me in the face as I load the oven with pizza for years to come?

Are you against using oven cleaner?

The self-clean mode worked a miracle on our encrusted oven. It was absolutely spotless with no scrubbing. However, realize that the intense heat can occassionally actually damage the electrical components in your appliance.

To hell with the cleaning... I want to hear the story behind the mess!!

I have used a dish towel soaked in hot water and a few drops of Dawn dish soap ... then lay the towel over the oven bottom overnight. Helps in dissolving the burnt sugars.

Don't forget that the wet towel is inside before using the oven again ... been there, done that.

Well, the story is that I wanted to bake biscuits. My bride had previously baked her "Christmas Crack" spoon bread, and the batch overflowed.

Now, here's where the id10t comes in. She tells me to bake another batch of the spoon bread for the evening party, in the lower oven. It's all set up. Follow these directions.

Not wanting to disturb that setup, I fired up the upper oven, and on preheat, the residue flamed up. Smoke set off the detectors. My phone was upstairs. I was fighting the Class B fire, using the smothering with wet cloth method, to avoid splashing burning butter everywhere. Not hearing the monitoring company call, they assumed the worst, and sent the FD. Upon discovering the missed call, I called back, and was on hold for fifteen minutes before a human from the monitoring center called back again. While I was on hold. I asked for them to cancel the calls. Too late.

Being a police volunteer, the FD graciously smiled and left upon my explanation.

I am still very frustrated with the monitoring company putting me on electronic hold from the get go. I hope to compose a lucid letter of lament which may help improve their service.

I will try the dawn soap idea.

I did manage to take out the damaged bottom panel of the new oven, and am gratified that I can replace it with a new one.

Sorry that happened to you. I had to fill out my own ID10T a few months ago when I made a pasta bake in the 10” cast iron. Somehow I thought I could ‘one hand’ it from the stovetop into the oven.

The pan is heavy enough, add all the ingredients and that’s a big fat nope…I lost my leverage and about half of it spilt onto the bottom of the oven.

Well, it sounds like self clean mode already inadvertently attempted with poor results.

I'd go with some old school oven cleaner, spray and sit overnight.

That's quite alarming. Pun aside, that would disturb me. These are people supposed to handle alarm calls; how many people were tied up with how many calls for 15 minutes???

BT/DT: I had a buddy who filches my Cinnamon Rolls coming over, so I hid them in the oven. In a Rubbermaid plastic container. The next day I turned the oven on to pre-heat it for a pizza. Then went outside to sweep my patio. The resulting mess and stink was biblical in scope.

I would think applying a low amount of heat to return the butter to a liquid state would allow some of it to be wiped out. The sugar is causing the problem. I would try oven cleaner or the self cleaning feature on the oven. I'm guilty of my own self inflicted mess recently. I opened the pantry and reached to the top shelf to grab a box of pasta. A glass quart container of Karo corn syrup came with it. Of course it hit the floor with glass and corn syrup from one end of the kitchen to the other. Not a fun one to clean up I'm still finding hardened drops of corn syrup in corners and crevices.

Note to self anything in glass containers do not go on top shelf.

As a FF every monitored alarm company in my area doesn't give a hoot about talking to you to confirm a fire call. ON a fire alarm panel indication they call the fire department. And even if you suddenly get through we are still coming even if you say all is OK to investigate and confirm. Maybe its different elsewhere but I doubt it.

Try to scrub up what you can then put it on self clean, it gets super hot and burns everything off and all that will remain is a fine ash you can wipe/sweep up.

I used to work in a manufacturing plant that produced Karo corn syrup. Better get it all or the ants will move in. They love the stuff. We used to use caustic water to clean the stuff with a mop, but I doubt you want to use that on your kitchen floor. Hot water helps.

EZ off spray cleaner, careful of the fumes. Fumeless type does not seem to work very well.

Dear wife spilled apple pie on the glass door and front interior of our oven. Self clean cycle left a little white ash that wiped right up. Oh, it will stink up the whole house. Shut doors and open a window. We do it once a year, not so bad.

This and some elbow grease.

I do not use the self-clean; the extremely high heat is not good for the oven's electronic components.

A razor blade works well to clean the oven door glass.

This works for me...learned it when I worked in a restaurant kitchen.
Saturate with windex. Lay towels over the Windex. Leave over night. If you still have some left, heat teh oven to 350...turn off and repeat teh Windex & towels. Plastic putty knives are nice and safe.

Firefighters like pizza.

True story. We had a similar experience with a frozen pizza. I called the fire department even to let them know everything was fine and was told they were coming anyway. I already had a couple pizzas in the second oven which were ready when the firefighters showed up, so I gave them one.

We have one oven that's non-self cleaning. Baking soda and vinegar didn't work. I went straight to rubber gloves and the good oven cleaner which worked.
