A good friend of my mother lives in Hamburg, Germany and she hasn't heard from her in months - which is very unusual.

Gusla (Mom's friend) has been having health issues for a couple of years and I'm pretty sure she has passed from this earth to be with her husband but I'd like to know if that is truly the case so that Mom can have some closure. I've done online searches for obituaries and even graves but haven't had any success. That's good, in a way, because maybe she is still here and just unable to write anymore, but I feel that my searches weren't complete enough because I don't know how things work over there.

Can any of our German members, or anyone that knows someone there, help me find any information as to Gusla's status? If you e-mail me I can provide her full name and address.

An aside - her husband was a Luftwaffe pilot who flew JU88s in every theater of the war. In later years he was my dad's supervisor at a gas refinery overseas and we would have Klaus and Gusla over for dinner on occasion. As a young teen with a huge interest in WWII history their visits were fascinating. He - life growing up in military school, then Luftwaffe training and combat. Her - life as a young girl during the war and what was needed to survive.

Unfortunately Klaus passed away a few years ago, but he had a long run. Yesterday would have been his 100th birthday.

My Dad was 1/2 Italian so he and Klaus would give each other some good-natured ribbing. One was how upset Klaus was about the Italians fighting ability. He would complain that the Italians would always have problems with their planes and have to fly back to base before the mission was completed. Dad would respond, "Klaus, who were the dummies? You went on to get shot at while the Italians were back home making love." Smile

Anyway, if anyone can help me find information regarding Gusla it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

I tried obituary’s and Lokal phone books, name and address, just the name, just the address, but unfortunately I didn’t find anything useful.

Gusla seems to be quite the unusual first name, could it be a short or nickname for something else?

Anyway, I hope the other members have more luck.

Thanks KLGUY. I really appreciate the effort. And it's good to know she's not showing up in obituaries, although it does give some concern as to what her status is at present.

Fortunately HH is working on this, too, and having some success. We should know something definitive this weekend.

HH, as well, said Gusla's first name was unusual. And for all these years I thought it was supposed to have an Umlaut over the u, but he was able to verify that her first name truly is Gusla, without the Umlaut. I always thought it was a German name that, if not common, was well known. If Gusla is still alive and able to read, or have letters read to her, I'd like to ask the family history of her name as it seems to be quite a rare one.

Just got word from HH that Gusla is still with us. It sounds like she might be having some memory issues but it's good to know she'll get the Christmas card we're sending today.

Thank you for the „flowers“, marksman41.
It was a pleasure and only very minor effort to help.
You‘re right, time and again, I can see some of the best people on SIGforum.

That’s certainly a relief. And, yes, Sigforum is quite a community.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
