Who is Pantone and why does their color of the year matter?

Pantone is a color service that companies of all channels utilize to find out which will be the trendy colors for certain parts of the calendar but more importantly they also provide a color standard that companies can refer to. There's many color services out there, Pantone is the most well known. The whole color of the year label is more about marketing and content generation but, it does announce to the world in this case that the on-trend color palettes will revolve around the white color and the varying shades of that color.
For anybody that's not in the creative parts of nearly any business type, these color services appear to be absurd and ridiculous but they have their place. If you've ever wondered why certain colors seem to predominate store shelves, it's because those companies are utilizing a color service to provide direction for that season's product. If you have a product that needs to be a specific color, you're going to refer to a color service and their catalog codes for the colors you want so that those suppliers & vendors you contract with, know the EXACT color you're talking about.
When I was working for a well known outdoor company in 2002, Army Special Forces wanted their tents and the rain flys to be a specific shade of tan. It couldn't be khaki or brown but it needed to be a shade of tan that had a pink hue to it...there's only so many deserts in the world where the sand is that color. The Pantone catalog was the resource that we utilized because it provided a standardized color reference that both sides could reference.

Developed a standardized system of applying an accurate numerical value to every shade of every color. Names such as "beige" can cover quite a lot of different colors.
It matters to people, businesses, and industries that are involved in using color and are on the look out for upcoming trends. These could include furniture manufacturers, the auto industry, designers, architects, individuals selecting paint for their room or house, the clothing industry, etc.

White is a color. Black is the absence of color.
