I know nothing about whiskeys. Old Crow is what I might get on a rare occasion. My choice of poison is Rum and Tequila along with wine.

He said he appreciates everything I have done for him.

How well did he do?

He must like you a lot. Whisky "snobs" regard Hibiki very highly. They are virtually impossible to find and at a high price. I think now they are overhyped, though. The taste is almost, though not quite, up to the hype.

As a young sailor in 1960 in japan we were not allowed to purchase American or Canadian whisky at E M club.
That left your fine gift,we could purchase on the beach.
Enjoy it in moderation.

I haven't been able to find any great Japanese Whisky in the last two or three years and that one would qualify - congrats. Cool
I look for that one every time I am in Total Wine and always zilch.
FWIW I do prefer their Single Malts over the Blended.
