Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best![]() |
That's not an aggressive bear, that's a curious bear. If the bear had been aggressive, she'd be dead. It looked to me like it was more interested in the dog than her. Which is why most national parks out west won't let you take pets on the trails. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.

No thinking required for me on that score. Agree with those who say it's a youngster. Also agree no way I go out there unarmed. No guns allowed? No way I go. To paraphrase a gunwriter: I would bring a gun. And all my friends who have guns. ... stirred anti-clockwise.

Bitch better learn to carry something. Sorry to use foul language but maybe I was talking about the dog! Because the owner wasn’t carrying anything but an iPhone. Nine years to retirement! Just waiting!

A lot if people are oblivious to the dangers around them so they're often unprepared when situations like this occur.

Maybe the big fuzzy brown dog just wanted to play.... It appears this happened in Canada. Not sure what she could legally carry. Just a few additional thoughts. I give this woman a lot of credit. She did not freak out. She stood her ground while trying to make it back where she could get help or back to safety. Had she let go of her dog she or the dog would of been attacked and killed. I do not know what her mind set was about the phone. But guessing she saw it from a distance and was taking a video of it. It charged her and wisely did not make a run for safety and kept the camera on as the encounter ensued. probably thought she was going to be attacked so chose to record her last effort to survive. She was close to a residence so maybe she was going to get the mail or check on a neighbor. Most posting do not live in bear country and have none or very little knowledge of bear behavior or experience with them other than internet or articles on them. I live in bear country. Have had an encounter with a black bear sow and three cubs. It worked out for all of us. Have also been in very close proximity to a handful of other large black bears. I have seen a similar size Griz once in the wild from a distance. Have no doubt been in area's where they were and did not see. Having a firearm is in no way a guarantee that things will go in your favor. A lot of attacks happen in very heavy cover where you would have almost no time to react. I know Tmats has some experience with bears as well. That bear is pretty normal size for an American Griz. I know it is Canada. But Behemoth brown bears are not American Grizzly's. What I see when I see that bear is his head size. She is very lucky and did what she could to save herself and her dog. Fortunately it worked out. I would guess that bear has been seen around that area more than a few times. Being attacked or mauled by a bear can happen to anyone in bear country. Armed or not. I am generally prepared. But you are in their domain. Certain activities or situations raise the probability of an attack a lot. Cubs, coming across a kill site. Hunting, fishing, hiking, berry picking, etc. To name a few of the obvious ones. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

It's not the bear, it's the owner. "Ninja kick the damn rabbit"

I don't think she was out hiking, just walking down a large gravel road with a number of vehicles and motor homes in the area. Not surprised she was unarmed. Canada or not. .....never marry a woman who is mean to your waitress.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. She landed the plane and walked away. Seems good to me.
