Agree on the Chinese food in Chinatown. Ate at a Szechuan place there a few weeks ago that was fantastic. Cash only, small, red tables. Can't help with the name, sorry.

Tacfoley if you are still reading, I have layovers in Cambridge all the time. I often go see my sister in London but if not I'm hanging in Cambridge for a few days. I would enjoy the opportunity to buy you a pint or three sometime!

Thanks for all of the responses, keep them coming. I've some experience with traditional British food, so it sounds like we did ok when we stuck with an "American" burger chop House on our last trip. Chinatown will likely be a stop for one night or two. Our breakfasts are covered with the b&b, and they cook to order. I'll add to my own list if any are interested when visiting.

Burger & Shake up near the college district a few blocks south west of Kings Cross station. We had good food at the Norfolk Arms in the same area, and good quick cheap Cornish style pasties from a vendor in the station. ( I'm from a UP family and they passed the test)

We also thought Honest Burger (several locations) had a good burger and shake.

I absolutely love to eat at pubs!!! Sounds funny, but the ones I've eaten at have some really good barbecue chicken. I can't point to any one, but asking locals like hotel clerks and taxi drivers will get you steered to some good places.

Camberley there in Surrey is where I spent the most time since my buddy and his wife live there. The local restaurants there around the city center were really good, especially this one Italian food restaurant.

Also, there was a really good Italian food restaurant right by the London Eye. The original Hard Rock Cafe there not too far away from Buckingham Palace isn't worth the time since its glory days have long passed.

Again, locals will point you to the best places.

I too wish I could help but I haven't been there since 1972. Pub food was usually quite good as I recall but with the big brew houses having taken over so many of the private pubs I have no clue if their fare is still pretty good.

I have not been for a number of years, but Langan's used to be a great place. Founded by Sir Michael Caine who spent a lot for the best chefs and staff.

London is huge, like New York and Tokyo, there's a lot of crappy, run of the mill, restaurants available. Anything around the tourist areas, like here in the States, will be overpriced, thematic, garbage. London is famous for their East Indian cuisine with all the ex-pats living there, Chicken Tikka Masala has been labeled the official dish of the UK by many.

Here's some places I've enjoyed:
St.John (Smithfield) - Chef Fergus Henderson's famous restaurant and salute to offal/off cuts
Duke's Brew & Que - American style BBQ
Toff's (Muswell Hill) - Famous for their fish and chips
Marksman - Arguably the best Sunday roast served.
Roast (Borough Market) - Sunday roast specialty
Wheeler's of Saint James - Famous chef Marco Pierre White's former restaurant.
Caravan (King's Cross) - Modern brit food

This list should help also

I'd be curious about what you find - we're planning on spending 9 days in the London area next March/April. We're going to meet my daughter there who will be studying abroad in Belgium for a semester.

1st day update, we made it to London ok..... Worst turbulence coming in to land that I've ever experienced. Our afternoon meal as a group was at the Marquis Cornwallis, 31 Marchmont St, Bloomsbury, London WC1N 1AP, UK. The school buys the meal there because it is nearby the hotel and a short introduction to crossing traffic. Typical pub, order at the bar dinning. Burgers were dry and overcooked, and they were out of the steak and the fish and chips. The meat pie was tasty and served with your standard british chips. The place I mentioned earlier Burger and Shake is still there and we will be checking in again after we sample from their menu

Here's a tip. Roti King, 40 Doric Way, London NW1 1LH, Euston.

I am told that you have to try the lamb. Cash only, basement, proverbial hole-in-the-wall, if using the toilet kindly open part of the window.

Mind you, seating is scarce. Enjoy!
