Need to buy the wife a new phone. She does not have a smart phone now. Considering the Galaxy models. Which one is the best value, she is not going to be an app-power user. NO I-PHONE will be considered. Only over my dead body will any Apple product be considered. Thinking of Galaxy 9. Thanks

If you want to save some money and still have a great phone, look at the LG G6. I really like mine and it does everything I want in a smart phone. The camera is awesome with a standard lens and a wide angle lens. Jim ________________________ "If you can't be a good example, then you'll have to be a horrible warning" -Catherine Aird

My wife has a Galaxy J3 V 2018 and likes it (which is very high praise).

I love the S9. I considered upgrading to the S10 but quickly decided that my S9 will be a great phone for awhile still. I highly recommend the S9. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

I'm still using my S4. Was hoping to upgrade to the S10 if it would be the folding tablet/phone, and I guess there is one now, but I'm not paying $2K. My advice is to find the best deal at whatever local brick and mortar you prefer after talking to more than one salesperson.

Get her a oneplus, it out preforms ALL of the current samsung models, for quite a bit less money. It's also my current device, and I had a oneplus 5 before it. https://www.oneplus.com/6t

Mine's an S9+ , upgraded from a Note4, and an S4Active before that. Never used the stylus on the Note, but liked the bigger screen. Good battery life & performs well for what I need it to do. The Enemy's gate is down.

I would very much disagree with that, though it is a great phone. And also the fact that the oneplus doesn't have a headphone jack is a deal killer for me. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

I have the S9 and love it. Prior to this I had the S7, S5 and S3. I guess I like the odd year models As someone else said, you could try the J3. It's a slimmed down Galaxy model with less features and, more importantly, price. If she's not going to use all the features of the S9 I wouldn't spend the $ on a newer model and try the J3.

You're going to feel a little pressure... |
S8 should be available refurbished for very little. It should suit her needs and then some. Bruce "The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams “It is just as difficult and dangerous to try to free a people that wants to remain servile as it is to try to enslave a people that wants to remain free." -Niccolo Machiavelli The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. -Mencken

Look at the Moto G7. Widely considered best bang for the buck if not a power user.

I went from the S6 to the S9 in December of last year. I might add, it was a reluctant change, as I really liked my S6...just wouldn't keep a charge for more than 2 hours at the time. Copied all the apps over, and was astounded at how much faster the response time seemed with the S9. I don't have problems with dropped calls like I did previously, and voice calls seem much clearer. Only thing I didn't like about the S9 was Bixby. You can disable it, but until I learned how, i found it annoying. “I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.”

Fair enough, the SoC doesn't quite compete with the S10's snapdragon 855, as the 6T is a 6 month old device and has the 845. but everywhere else the 6T has it. as for the headphone jack, moving from a feature phone I'd just as soon give the headphone jack a pass as it's a dying legacy feature, weather we like it or not.

stepping up from my Luddite heritage via the old iPhone 5 to the Galaxie 9+ last July, I have slowly increased my use/comprehension of some of the uses. The screen is adequate for my geezer vision, & the camera is superlative. Yes, I can actually make a phone call & send TXT also. It does a LOT more stuff than I'll ever likely use but is a pleasant package to tutor myself now & then. Perhaps a bit silly to pay so much and use less than all the potentials available. I change the settings every couple weeks to see what else I've overlooked. No matter how many on line tutorials on 'best 10 things to do with your S9+" etc they all add a little more to my enjoyment. **************~~~~~~~~~~ "I've been on this rock too long to bother with these liars any more." ~SIGforum advisor~ "When the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, then change will come."~~sigmonkey

Yeah, I can admit it's a dying feature, the headphone jack, but I'm determined to hang onto that sucker like a hungry baby on his mommy's teat. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

I have had, in order, an S4, S6, S8+ and now an S10 plus. I got them about 2.5 years apart from each other. I'd still have the S8plus if the new S10+ hadn't been free. Great phones, but it really does help you out to upgrade every 3 years or so. You can get an original Pixel XL 128GB for $250 at "woot" this month. Great phone, great battery, fantastic camera. -------------------- I like Sigs and HK's, and maybe Glocks

I recommend looking at the following places for the best deal on either an S9 or S10 (in no particular order) 1) Samsung's Web site 2) Best Buy 3) Your carrier 4) Target 5) Walmart Samsung was running some incredible pre-order deals. I recommend sticking with the carrier branded as opposed to the carrier unlocked version. Depending on which carrier you use, you won't get all the enhanced calling feartures (i.e., VoLTE, WiFi calling, visual voicemail). If the price difference is $150 or less between the two models, I'd bite the bullet and get the S10. That phone will easily last your wife three years and that point you'll want a new phone as the battery won't hold a charge very well.
