If you think the world is overpopulated you should drive across America or fly from Melbourne to Sydney. The vast emptiness that still exists on this planet is really something to witness.

There are places that are overpopulate sure but there are also places that are so untouched by humans it almost resembles another planet.

B’zactly

People who talk about overpopulation clearly have never traveled. (E.g. 80% of America lives east of the Mississippi.)

Anyone who thinks we need more people in this country needs to drive up the east coast from top to bottom it's one big traffic jam, I suggest I-95. Or fly up from Miami to Pittsburgh, NY City, at night. Many areas in the West as well.
The oceans are slowly being depleted of fish, as is the top soil of minerals. Coal, oil, natural gas, rare earth elements, all are being consumed up. Aquifers are being reduced in some cases dramatically.
In 1950 there were 2.5 billion people on earth, now in just 70 years there are now 8 billion.
Population in more prosperous areas such as Europe, parts of Asia, North America (other than immigration) is starting to decline. Other areas such as the continent of Africa (more than half of global population growth between now and 2050 is expected to occur in Africa). Central and South America, parts of Asia, are the main growth.

I hate the overcrowding, congestion, increased traffic/ delays, increased crime, depleted water resources (largely due to mismanagement and governmental failures to plan), and all the other problems that come with overcrowding and population densities... But, as had been pointed out, there are vast stretches of desolation on this planet.

At this moment in time, yes, the population is increasing... but what you have failed to recognize is that the rate of increase is DECREASING, and this decreasing rate has been going on for years. Of course various unpredictable factors; health and medical practices, diseases/ viruses, world economics, natural disasters, cultural and religious practices and wars, could all affect the rate of population growth... but as it stands right now the world population is forecasted to peak @ 2050 at just below 10 billion people... and it is forecasted to go into a long decline from there.

The average birth rates across the world are falling... and have been falling for decades, with various demographics with different socio-economic, religious/ cultural practices each producing differing birth rates. It's been several years since I last checked but, of all the various falling birth rates, Muslim populations were producing the highest birth rate, with Latin populations producing the next highest. India's population is growing as well and will outnumber China's, if it hasn't already.

It takes an average birth rate of 2.1 just to sustain a population. The US is better off than most countries because it is producing exactly that, and is maintaining a fairly level population. The ONLY reason the US population numbers continue to rise is because of both legal and illegal migration.

Russia and especially China are experiencing significant population declines, as well as an aging population. China is forecasted to drop below 1 B citizens, to @ 700-800 million people by 2050, and their last recent census confirms this drop (some believe that the CCP is padding their last census #s, and their actual population is even lower than reported).

At current birth rates, Japan is forecasted to be a deserted chain of islands in 200 years.

This is one reason there is so much instability in the world now, and forecasted to continue. Both Russia and China realize that just to survive and remain world powers, they need to both grow their respective territories/ resources and populations. You can't
exploit resources or manufacture goods/ services to grow your economy and build powerful militaries when you have both a declining and aging population. Europe isn't much better. The sands are quickly slipping through the hourglass for Russia and China and they are on a tight timeline to make moves now, before they decline to a point where they can no longer correct the decline and become irrelevant. Desperation is a powerful motivator for change...and extreme actions.

Consider this for a moment. When world governments spend more than they take in in taxes, that debt becomes a tax burden that is placed on the productive working citizens (and future generations). The larger the working population is, the more productivity they accomplish, making it easier to pay that debt. The tax burden is spread out over a larger number of tax payers, making it more tolerable.

Take that same national debt and lay it on the shoulders of a declining and aging (retiring) population and that means the remaining productive working members must shoulder a much larger percentage of the tax burden.

I get it. I hate how crowded, how congested, and uncivilized people have become. I live in a beautiful area, but out-of-staters have discovered this beauty, so I avoid some my favorite places just to avoid the crowds of tourists. I FAR prefer to be in remote wilderness areas, enjoying nature's beauty, away from man and government- caused problems. I hate going to cities or urban corridors (although there are places in cities I would love to visit if they were deserted).

Sometimes I think starting over, with a much smaller population and much less civilization, is the way to go... but I have no illusions about the amount of sheer work, hardship and misery those of us remaining would have to endure...and I wonder if there would even be enough of the population remaining to collectively recall the lessons of why we went into decline in the first place.

Demographics is Destiny... be careful what you wish for.

Funny thing about industrialization. When most of the population was on farms growing things people had lots of kids because they were needed cheap labor. When the majority of the population migrated toward industrial jobs in cities children became expensive, noisy, and messy little things.

The United States gradually industrialized over 150 years. I'm the last of the baby boomer generation. I graduated high school in 1979. Our graduating class was over 600 kids. Today that same school is lucky to graduate 200 kids a year, and Pueblo's population has grown slightly.

Here in Pueblo we are seeing almost every retail and fast food joint with help wanted signs in the window. We may have reached the point where we don't have enough kids to fill the entry level jobs. The baby boomers have just about all retired, and each generation after that gets smaller and smaller.

The book The Population Bomb warned of the dangers of a population explosion. It doesn't seem like that is going to happen. Our demographics aren't nearly as bad as Russia and China. Some are saying China will fall out of a major industrial power within the next 10 to 20 years. We'll see about that, but with their one child only policy their demographics are much worst than ours. Our saving grace is people want to come here. And, its always been that way.

Sure there are lots of low population areas but they're typically that way for reasons. Food production requires a lot of habitable land. But most of the low or unpopulated areas simply won't easily support life due to lack of water, extreme climate, poor soil, extreme terrain, etc. And with the advent of deep drilling and AC even many of those areas are being heavily populated, like most of the US southwest, at least until the aquifers are depleted.
But hey if you think overpopulation is not the root of many of our problems that's ok believe what you want. But I believe it is.

When you get a virus, you get a fever. That's the human body raising its core temperature to kill the virus. Planet Earth works the same way: global warming is the fever, mankind is the virus. We're making our planet sick. A cull is our only hope. If we don't reduce our population ourselves, there's only one or two ways this can go: the host kills the virus, or the virus kills the host. Either way..

Yes Europe and Japan's birth rate is in decline. This is true of almost all, if not all, affluent countries.
