My daughter, who is just wrapping up her junior year had applied to get into a summer program at BU for honors students where they can take 8 hours of college classes and get a "training wheels" version of higher ed.

We found out yesterday she was accepted and even though I so do not have the money to send her ($8000 all in) I am going to beg, borrow and steal to make this happen for her....Not only does she get to take the classes but they have a full schedule of workshops, seminars and fun activities in and around Boston.

I think this will be huge for her but I am an emotional wreck at the thought of letting my little girl loose in the city without me there.

The area that BU is in is between Allston/Brighton and the Back Bay. Pretty tame. Boston is a good college town.

Arc.

I grew up about 20 minutes from campus and have a ton of family and friends in the area so if anything were to go sideways I have a small army I can mobilize.

We actually had a vacation planned and were going to be in the area in late Jun early July so timing is good but I was looking forward to spending some time with her. That said, this is way too good an opportunity to pass up and will help her down the road.

My daughter will start BU this fall. We checked it out a few weeks ago. Great campus and neighborhood. Pricey too. If she likes the program, have her apply. They have generous grant programs.

I do hate having her clear across the country though.

Congrats!

Just watch the expenses - as you know college $$ is absolutely crazy these days.

Like 'anchor-chained-to-your-ankle' crazy.

As someone who is just past 30, had a baby girl recently, and along with my wife are still paying a boatload of student loan debt...

Please, please, please - do not let her incur too much debt. Ideally, keep it less than 1/2-3/4 of her first year's salary, and hopefully much less.

High debt forces you in higher paying jobs, which in turn means ridiculous hours (i.e. consulting at 90% travel and 100+ hours a week), or difficult work environments.

If that means going to a cheap state school, or CC and then two years of college, so be it.

Debt is the downfall of our generation. Indentured servitude is alive and well, don't fall for it!

That is excellent!

Let it be known she has support around (t)here should she need it.

I am ~30 mins SW of there where I495 and I95 meet.
My brother is a paramedic with the Brookline FD and is friendly with many FF, EMS, and LEO in the area- he's 10 mins away when on duty.

First of all, congrats to her for EARNING that!

I can guess she won't view it as the same, but how much would it cost to have her take general ed classes at the local community college? $8k is a lot of cash for summer classes. For comparison sake, it costs ~$11,000 per year for college courses at Colorado State University (where I went).

You may get more bang for your buck by having her take the general ed course close to home. Everyone needs to take courses such as English comp, history, psychology, etc...

My wife's cousin went to BU, so I know it's not cheap, but is the cost worth it?

Congrats, but that is a lot of scratch for a summer program.

Hopefully she gets some scholarships / grant $$ for college!
