Good on Governor Abbott!

“A tax-payer funded Texas waterpark is forced to ditch their 'Muslim-only' event after Gov Greg Abbott threatened to cut their funds.

Epic Waters in Grand Prairie, Texas drew outrage this week as it released fliers for the June 1 event that celebrates the religious holiday Eid al-Adha, selling tickets for $55 a piece. …”

I'm still trying to wrap my head around a taxpayer funded and city owned water park. Is that a common thing?

Actually, they’ve been forced to rename a mooslim only event.

Now if a bunch of youthful Texans decide to attend in bathing suits consisting of butt floss for women and banana hammocks for men, let the offended depart the pattern!

Yes. Along with hockey rinks, baseball stadiums, football fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, museums, convention centers, fishing piers, etc.

Interesting. Not too many in NM, so... Wink I was familiar with the other venues being publicly owned, but I wasn't familiar with a water park being handled like that.

I’ve been following this on the local news and am nothing but impressed with our governor, he and Ken Paxton are definitely making it harder for muslims to set up camp here… more could still be done but at least they recognize what’s going on.

This is the truly sad part of this...
Creeping socialism.
Private swim clubs and association by choice is pushed out because it can't compete with government.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Locally government owned and operated swimming pools have been around since they became a thing, plenty of us grew up with a city pool in a local park. Not every kid can belong to a country club or have a pool at home, but they can go to the city/county pool.

I think the beef is that a public-funded facility is being used by a group that excludes others from an otherwise public facility.

If the group were to rent the entire facility (if that's even a thing), then they could dictate who's allowed in and make exclusive invite. Think grad night at Disneyland, renting Chuck E Cheese for a birthday party, etc. I know some of our parks and pools can be rented out (for a fee or reservation) and then can dictate who's allowed to use the facility.

I don't think that's the case here. If the local Muslim congregation wants a Muslim-friendly event at the water park, then rent the entire park.

The fact the organizer even tried this bullshit should tell you all you need to know about DFW. Read between the lines.

Well, I grew up with a place called Country Hill Swim and Tennis Club. It wasn't ritzy. It was reasonable to belong for the summer. It was a neighborhood pool, with 5 tennis courts back when tennis was more popular. It was a fun place where I could ride my bike and hang out with my friends. I was on the swim team. When I turned 15 I got a summer job there.

The County built a "rec center" and the taxpayer funded pool put the private pool out of business.

Now, the County pool is shut down too... at least for this year.

Budget cuts will also impact the Parks and Recreation Department. This summer, the County will not open the pools at St. Vincent Community Center and Kennedy Recreation Complex. Both pools require major repairs and there is not enough money to cover those costs.

https://stlouiscountymo.gov/st...ouncils-budget-cuts/

Having experienced both, I can tell you it's a different atmosphere. The private pool was much more relaxed. They had a concession stand, but you could bring your own food/beverage. They organized events, like adult night, and lots of fun things.

It was very different from what most kids will experience today.

OK, I'm a bit of a prude......but how do you swim or frolick? Basically you're getting wet...fully dressed. Some may call that a mistake or a prelude to drowning.

I recall my Swimming merit badge testing. I had to take my pants and long sleeve off while treading water and attempt to fashion them into flotation devices.

I'd like to see more than a threat of cutting funds. Whoever came up with this needs to become unemployed and then some.
