What dash cameras are recommended by the Hive?

I got a spot bonus today and I decided on getting a dash camera with it.

Ideally I want fore and aft coverage with wiring I can hide.

If there are options to send last few minutes to the Cloud in the event of an incident that would be even better.

Thank you for your sage advice.

Merry Christmas one and all.

I’ll hook one up in the rear eventually and as it’s own power source for protection when the vehicle is parked.

I recommend ignoring us as we all buy one or two dash cams and then leave them in our cars for years. At best, our comments will be anecdotal. At worst, well intentioned person won't realize that a good camera can get clear images of license plates and drivers faces but their "great" dash cam cannot. Also, dash cam technology has been making great improvements every year so someone saying good things about last year's or two year's agos camera is apples and oranges.

On the other hand, I urge you to pick a recommended dash cam from dashcamtalk.com's best of List because those maniacs will have 3 or more installed at once and you can see the difference in identical circumstances. They eat, sleep, and breath this stuff.

In my lifetime, I have bought two dashcams and both were recommend by dashcamtalk.com. The first was a single camera when I lived in Canada and it worked great. Two years later, I moved to Texas and bought a front/rear camera and it's been awesome as well. With 2 years of progress, my dual camera set-up cost 33% less than my original single camera set-up, had better resolution, and had built-in GPS instead of external antenna. The front camera was same form factor as my original single camera, and they had managed all of the upgrades in the same wedge form factor.

When I buy my next vehicle, I'll likely buy a front/rear camera recommended by them.

I have a Garmin 57 and it produces images clear enough to identify license plates. Had a road rager go off on me because I tooted my horn when the light changed and then had the nerve to pass him in the left lane. Had him charging at me for the next mile which kept the camera engaged as I was dodging him. That allowed me to get a clear video of him driving into oncoming traffic to run a res light to get ahead of me, which gave me a nice clear shot of his plates. When he blocked me at the next intersection I rolled down my window and stated 911 was on the way so he got into his car and ran. I then sopped at the police station and had the desk sergeant review the video and some selected screen shots. The sergeant then told me he would look into this drivers record and if he was local he'd get a visit from a patrol unit and if not he would call the drivers local PD and discuss the matter with one of their officers.

Personally I wish that Michigan were like Ohio in regards to severe traffic offenses. In Ohio a private citizen can file a complaint against a driver like this and take them to court. In Michigan if the offense isn't observed by a Law Enforcement Officer it doesn't exist.

I've stopped counting.

I too want to look into a new dashcam. I have an older Garmin and it does great, but I know they have advanced leaps and bounds since then just like phone cameras.

I was just issued a state agency take home vehicle, which is a huge perk, but I want to put a dashcam in it just in case something happens. I will keep the Garmin for my truck and get a new one for the state vehicle so I am very interested in suggestions as there are so many products out there.

I buy from GPS City or B&H Photo.

DashCams chew through MicroSD cards. I just started to use an Industrial card for my DashCam Amazon Link

I have a BlackVue dual camera set up as well. I had it in my older Tacoma for a year and then put it into my current 2019 model where it's been running flawlessly for four years.

Take a look at Blackboxmycar.com for lots of good info on most all dashcam gear.

So I would like to do a front and rear camera for a vehicle I have been issued. I am liking the VIOFO A129 Pro Duo 4K 2-Channel Dash Cam with GPS but I don’t like it sticks to the windshield. I like something that is mounted by a suction cup as then it can be moved, but of course they can fall in Texas heat. Any ideas for a good duo camera that is suction mounted?

I’ve never seen a dashcam that mounts with a suction cup. Every one I’ve seen or used mounts to a “plate” which is stuck to the window with an adhesive.

FYI.. as mentioned, blackboxmycar.com is where I recommend looking. I’ve used Thinkware and blackvue cameras. Both have been good, but I’d give the edge to blackvue.

My Rove came with suction cup mounts and a 3M plate.

The cups can come in handy if you want to temporarily switch to a different vehicle sort term like a rental car.
