Thank you Greymann!
BTW, where in NM are you at? I lived in Socorro for nine years, late 70's through the late late 80's.

I'm in Los Lunas, in the late 70's- 80's in Albuquerque.
Saturday nights down South Eubank at the street racers dragway. It was all fun and games till some fella broke his driveshaft in '57 chevy and pole vaulted his car. The police shut it down after that incidence.

The PG appears to original, so I assume it’s the iron glide. I’ll have it at my house this weekend, so I’ll take a look

You guys keep quoting HP ratings etc. I believe the rebuilt 327 won’t be more than 250-300 hp.

My goal is simple driving, highway cruising speeds, easy maintenance, least complex installation, and value. Spending $1000 or more to rebuild the original PG doesn’t make sense. Hence the need for an overdrive.

My 59 Impala has the original 3-speed with OD. It’s fun and adequate. However, a modern transmission would make it more user friendly. A gutless 283/2-brl with 3-sp OD doesn’t burn up the pavement.

If daily driver you will want that 4 speed over drive . I wouldn’t even consider a 3 speed.

Ran a 700R4 behind the L98 350, a 150 shot of NOS almost weekly at the strip, 12 seconds at 115 consistently with it being a driver, never had an issue with it mechanically.

Should be able to stand up to your engine without any problems for what you are doing.

That drove me crazy. Big Grin

One of my biggest crimes and regrets, what I did.. or rather didn't do with that car. The older I get, the more guilty and remorseful I feel. Frown

I was the parts manager at Baca Buick Pontiac GMC in Belen from 85 to 88. My 67 2+2 came from Veguita.

Slap it behind a bare stock small block Chevy 350 and watch it fail.
They are trash... you can Google it and get all kinds of stories.

Or ask your favorite tranny shop if they like and recommend the POS.

What would be your recommendation for an overdrive automatic transmission for the OP that bolts to a 250-300HP 327?

Monkey for the win. I’m leaning toward the 200-4R.

However, in my research I discovered that I had been misnaming this transmission. It’s actually the 200-4R. I made the mistake of using the same pattern as the 700-R4.

Here's a link for some mid mounts
to replace your original powerglide
bell housing mounts.
This is similar to what I used when I used an automatic. You'll still need a cross member, but this company on link above also sells a cross member.

But where's the pictures?

A side drift; Shovelhead when you worked in Belen I'm sure we crossed paths. I bought parts and had my 56 alignments done at Baca.
Small world.

Greymann, probably slim to none as a chance but did you ever see a '77 black El Camino, red cloth interior with Corvette YJ8 aluminum wheels around town? I sold it in Socorro, it ended up in LL, last I heard it was still on the streets in late '88. It was funny, I ran into the lady that owned it, as I was leaving a store it was sitting next to my car. I waited for her to come out and asked her how she liked my old car. I think she figured I was mistaken until I asked her "Did you find the hidden kill switch under the dash?" Well, that got her attention, she said she bumped it off and it took her a while to figure out what was going on.
