Best canned chili?

marksman41Best canned chili?
Recently I asked myself the same question. So, I went over to Wal-Mart and got a can each of Hormel (w/beans 'cause I like beans in my chili), Wolf w/beans, and Great Value (beans).
Of these three, my preference was the Wolf chili. To me the other brands had a sweeter flavor, which wasn't bad, whereas the Wolf tasted more like the chili I make.

Oz_ShadowCampbells Firehouse chili is all I will eat out of a can now. It is the least can-like chili.

I'll agree with RHINOWSO on this one. Great Caesar's ghost, man... if I had to eat canned chili, I'd go make a sammich. Or eat a pack of Lance crackers or something. My word, fellas!

oddballI can eat canned vegetables, pork & beans, soups, etc. But I do not like canned chili, and I tried them all, with and without beans. But occasionally, I will make a large 8 qt batch and freeze 2 servings per bag, so that I have homemade chili at almost any given time.

StorminNorminI have never had a canned chili in my life. I am sure it might be something to add to my food supply stock for an emergency, but not something I would eat otherwise.
When I first started making chili, I used a recipe that only took about 20 minutes. Now when I make chili it takes a few hours. I am sure I would prefer the 20 minute chili over canned chili.

bdylanI was watching this thread closely hoping for a clear winner that I wasn't aware existed. Seems can chili is just not good.

tatortoddI just checked my local HEB's (Texas grocery store) website, and their #1 selling canned chili is Wolf No Beans.

While I agree that the "original" Varallo's Chili was awesome, even while the family produced it on Craighead St. behind the TN Fairgrounds for canning (a block down from the Coca-Cola plant & two blocks from Mrs. Grissom's), I've tried the Vietti version, and it's not the same.
I grew up playing basketball against a Varallo, and ate at the 8th and Church "restaurant" a few times when I was younger. Yeah, I'm a "homer", but this is the real Varallo family I grew up with. It's a long read...

arfmelThe deal with canned chili is to not consider it to be “chili”. Consider it a convenient source of calories and bulk-forming stool precursor material that can be quickly heated and mixed with fritos, shredded cheddar cheese, and diced onions.

OKCGeneUgh barf canned chili. Yuk.
If I don't have any frozen in the freezer I'll just jump in the car and roll a few miles to Wendy's.
Wendy's chili, while not great, is good enough to eat, and far better than canned crap.
And yes, ARFMEL, I agree, a Frito Chili Pie is good stuff, as long as a GOOD chili is started with. Fritos, onion, shredded cheddar cheese, a dollop of sour cream, good eating!
I was going for ChikFilA for lunch tomorrow but now it's Wendy's chili.
Oh, let me add my top secret chili ingredient. Chopped bacon.

Although I'm sure I could probably learn how, I just never got around to learning how to make chili...or many other dishes...so, while I LOVE a good bowl of homemade chili I depend on family and friends for those. Otherwise, it's the canned stuff for me.
Stagg and Wolf brands are my favorite, but also a little more on the expensive side...so Hormel, as a cheaper alternative is what I have eaten the most of. Bean, No Bean, Chunky, Turkey, had 'em all and enjoyed them all.
I usually save them for chili cheese dogs during ball games...especially this time of year in Post Season play.
Other than cheese, onions, and hot sauce I don't do anything to jazz them up.
I truly feel sorry for you and your family. Please stop this atrocity now! There are a million recipes online. Try any one of them, you will never return to the can. So easy a third grader can make it.
Please cease and desist immediately and turn to YouTube.

While I do appreciate your sympathy...come on now...it's not
that bad!
I'm a simple man with simple tastes when it comes to food...don't get me wrong I surely do love good home made chili, but any port in a storm...and canned chili is a good way to break up the Chef Boyardee Overstuffed Ravioli diet.

Sister-in-Law just returned from the annual local roasted chili festival and she makes a Green Chili (chicken or pork) that is
just to die for and so I'm hoping to score a couple bowls of that at some point this Fall or Winter.
I'm generally a microwave, stove top, or oven guy...but I guess I'll have to figure out how to use a crock pot at some point.

satchMany years ago the News Commentator Paul Harvey told about a guy who entered a Chili cooking contest in Texas. The Judges tasted his and declared it was the best in the show. People were asking how he made it and wouldn't take no for an answer. Finally he said ok, and reached under the table and brought a large can and read, ground meat, onions, red beans, spices,etc.-------

Pipe SmokerI’ll just comment that I like Hormel Vegetarian chili as a better alternative to most canned beans.
Serious about crackers. October 02, 2018, 09:06 AM
Johnny 3eaglesAs a joke, I entered a Chili Cookoff at church. I took first place, and told.my secret so the 2nd place could win. I used 8 cans of Stagg Classic chili in a crock.pot.
