Avoiding upholstery damage when concealed carrying ...suggestions Login/Join

Hello,
Thought I'd pick your brains, (if you're willing)!
I like to conceal carry when driving. I've tried a number of small 9mm autos. I tried IWB and OWB. Regardless, I find that I am damaging (excessive wear) in my seat, where the gun is rubbing. I'm 5'2" and about 150# , so not overly large.
Anyone else have this problem ?? How did you cope ? Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions ! mike

Try Crossdraw or a shoulder rig when cruising. Several makers turn out dedicated car holsters. Andrews Leather makes a good one.

The 'Carjacker'...If you're looking for a holster for in-vehicle use, there is no better solution unless you've got a vehicle mounted holster, and even then it's debatable (and really vehicle/holster specific!) as to which solution is better.

Here's how it's made... Wink

Im 5'2" and 170 pounds, I cause more wear dragging my fat ass up onto the seat than my carry does.

I also just realized, upon thinking about it, that my "love handles" hit the seat before the butt of anything else does, and I guess thats why its not an issue.

Perhaps carrying appendix. It is definitely faster to draw from when seated and won’t dig into the seat backs. It’s what I do. I wouldn’t waste my money on a driving only/cross draw holster. Just my opinion.

I have BMW sport seats which is murder on the leather if I carry 3-4 o'clock position. I usually use a shoulder holster for long car rides but keep coming back to the Andrews CarJacker. I just need to decide which gun I want to dedicate to CarJacker duty.

I have tried appendix carry and I constantly forget to put the seatbelt between the gun and my body. Please for those that carry AIWB, remember to put the seatbelt against your body and not over the gun. I have seen what a seatbelt can do to the human body when pushing against the gun in a crash.

And I can't do seat covers. The stupid seatbelt is built into the seat.

I have this and have used it a lot when I travel and don't want something on my belt.

I have recently started using a neoprene tablet case. I can drop my gun in its holster plus a spare magazine in it and nobody is the wiser. As planners aren't used as much now, this is the more innocuous solution with the benefit of having the gun in its holster.

Can you just unsnap the holster and put in a pocket on the door?

When I was policing, I found my duty gun wore a hole in the seat of the crown Vic. I wear a IWB kydex now at 4O’clock and it’s showing on my f150, I’m not sure there’s anything to do besides a different manner of wear, like appendix or cross body.

Nice thing about the shoulder holster is it leaves the car when I step out.

^^What brand shoulder holster are you using and what gun. We had a sgt get presto and she rode a desk with a Galco Jack Ass shoulder holster for a year, then went back to the duty belt and safariland holster.

My buddy had one for a g17 and said it wasn’t bad to wear.

Appendix carry. Put the seat belt between your body and the gun butt. Or cross-draw either on the front of your body or left side with the gun butt facing forward.

FIST makes a great driving holster. It fits on the left hip, and is a horizontal carry and the gun can be fired from the holster in this position. It can easily, while being worn, be shifted to a vertical cross draw. The vertical, for me, is a slow draw, so I'd also carry a j-frame in the console I could drop in a pocket if need be.

I leave a small hand towel or rag in my drivers seat folded up about 4 layers thick. As soon as I get in the truck I wedge it between my pistol grip and the seat. Works well and was a pretty easy habit to get into.

While I appreciate everyone's efforts and excellent ideas, it not quite what I was looking for.
My needs are for everyday use. For example.....I get up in the morning and put on my gun (Sig365 IWB), later I make a trip to the auto parts place and on the way home, stop and buy gas and then to the grocery store.
Lots of getting in and out of the car. I am trying to avoid changing holsters or relocating my gun multiple times during the day.
So far, I've experimented with an ankle holster with a Sig 238 (it's comfortable but not a fast draw by any measure).
Today, I found that I can carry my Seecamp 32auto in the little "change" pocket in my front right pocket of my jeans. This conceals and carries well but is almost comical if I had to draw.
I'd much prefer to carry my 365 9mm but so far, I'm relying on the theory that any gun is better than no gun....but it's not very comforting.
Does anyone carry in a shoulder holster on a regular basis??? Comfort?? Fit?? Recommendations?? Cost ??
Many thanks!! mike

I carry in a Galco shoulder holster regularly (and almost exclusively!) during the cooler months, so basically any jacket day, 50 degrees or colder. I have what is essentially the Miami Classic II, though I purchased separate components as I wanted a wider shoulder harness. I carry a HK USPc in .357 SIG w/ two reloads and purchased the following components separately:

- SSH Harness (2.75" Wide)
- S3H Shoulder Holster
- HCL Horizontal Mag Carrier

With Two Magazines offsetting the weight of the loaded Pistol, the Shoulder Holster is well balanced and wears VERY comfortably. I really like the Horizontal Mag Carrier as it's MUCH easier to draw from than the traditional vertical snap/flap design and has a tension screw for retention adjustment. It's also quick and easy to take on/off, so EXTREMELY convenient! I store the Shoulder Holster on the back of my office chair so it's right there, but completely out of the way at the same time. Like anything else, it takes a little getting used to though. The harness straps though fairly soft, initially bothered my collarbone area after a few hours. Not sure if it needed some 'break-in' or I did, but I don't even really notice I'm wearing it any more.

The SSH Harness I purchased is no longer available, but if you're interested in a wide(r) harness than the 1.5" wide version of the Miami Classic II, Galco currently offers both 2" wide and 2.5" wide variants. The following pic shows relative differences in the various harness widths:

Honestly, if you intend to carry a P365, the width of the harness is likely not really an issue (assumes P365/P365X/P365XL), as it's a relatively light pistol.

Here's a couple of links from the Galco website for you to browse:

Galco Shoulder Holster Systems

Galco Shoulder Holster Components

The Miami Classic II is normally $329.00...But it's 30% OFF w/ Code 'BF24' so it's only $213.85 right now! Wink

Hope this helps...

Wish I could remember the name of the holster maker that offered the holster right for lower leg car carry.

Below the knee, it two hands to strap on and take off.
But very easily accessible one hand holstering and drawing.

For driving only.
$68.00

Use your own holster.
