Our Frigidaire refrigerator died a few months ago, and luckily we kept our Kitchen Aid from our old house.

Since, we've been getting by with 1 fridge & a small chest freezer, and are thinking about getting a 2nd fridge again (and moving the Kitchen Aid back into the garage).

Undecided on traditional or French door w/ drawer freezer.

Which brands have you found good & reliable, and which should we steer well clear of?

Thanks

I find it best to evaluate a purchase based on individual criteria of whatever is important to you.
Broad stroking by brand is problematic and ineffective, IMO.
Perhaps indicate what you want in a fridge might help?

I've had good luck so far with my Whirlpool Gold side by side.

I've been warned by a few dealers when shopping to agai Samsung appliances. The electronics (phones, tvs) are ok, but their appliances are under repair more than most.

We have bought a couple of lower end Whirlpool's in the last year. So far so good. The best we have ever had is an Ammana that is 15 years old to this point. None are a sxs. I do not care for them.

We purchased an LG LFXS29626S, 29 cu ft, french door, drawer freezer on bottom, dual ice maker and it has been fantastic. Wife is really happy with it.

Our new Whirlpool has been perfect for 4 years.
Stay away from any Samsung appliance.

We still have an LG we purchased in 2010 that has been flawless. I know some models have a bad rap for certain issues, but overall that's not awful.

House we're in now has a built in (Kitchen-Aid), realize every layout won't work with these let alone budget (damn they are pricy!). But if you can, the difference in performance of this vs any freestanding I've had is remarkable. Things like the longevity and freshness of vegetables, dairy, meats, etc. is night and day. At first we thought it was our imagination rationalizing the cost but I believe it's real after several years now.

Stick to Whirlpool/Amana or Fridgidaire. Good quality, US-made, and easy to source parts if needed.

Steer clear of Samsung and LG. Flashier and potentially more bells and whistles, but less reliable, and harder to get parts.

I had the same questions a few years ago, our resident appliance expert recommended staying away from the Samsung and LG brands. Even though they have some really convenient features, when they have a problem, the parts are not readily available. I purchased a Whirlpool Gold French 3 door style; its been fantastic so far.

Three years ago we replaced a Whirlpool, only problem was the icemaker quit. As it was almost fourteen years old we replaced it with another Whirlpool, this time a side by side with ice and water in the door. The old Whirlpool is still going strong at our daughters house.

We looked at Frigidaire, I was not impressed by a lot of little details like incandescent inside lighting and the fact that the meat drawer was an additional cost item.

All of our major kitchen appliances are Whirlpool.

To expand a bit.
We're predominantly looking at stainless to keep matched to the rest of the kitchen.

Open to either Side/Side or French Door.

Browsing a bit, looks like we're likely in the 1k-1.5k range.

Max dimensions in the kitchen space:
39w x 71h
Current Kitchen Aid is 37"D, but that's not the limit. Could probably got another couple inches without hitting the island.

Avoid LG. Ours is the biggest piece of crap.

In the first year, our ice-maker needed seven (SEVEN!!) service calls. After the issue kept coming back, LG finally agreed to replace the entire ice-making unit. By that time, I wanted the entire fridge replaced, but LG wouldn't budge.

The ice-maker works now, but is so poorly designed that every time you open the freezer door, a couple of ice cubes fall out on the floor.

Even though it's only three years old now, I've told the wife I'm ready to dump it and absorb the cost of getting another fridge (a different brand obviously)

This! Avoid LG and Samsung. Nice looking fridges but they have a habit of just barely making it past its warranty expiration date.

Samsung, as has been mentioned, should stick to electronics.

We've had a LG now for about 10 years, which has worked fine (knock on wood). Basic, bottom pull-out freezer drawer and a single door refrigerator on top. No ice-maker, no water spout, no fancy Wi-Fi or electronics, etc. Maybe that's why it still works. Our older Kenmore downstairs still works fine, too.

When we built this house 10 years ago, we made the mistake of buying a Samsung/sammisong. It actually made it 8 years, give or take. Then it broke and there were no parts available. It was a computer board in the door that controlled part of the icemaker operation. We finally got a tech to come out and look at it. Charged us a fortune and did pull that board out. The ice door stopped flapping all day and all night. Yeah, we paid for a new board, but never got it.

I'm an easy going kind of guy. Not. It did no good, we finally gave up and bought a GE. At least an American name. But I do hold grudge. For a long time. And I'll never again buy a Korean product. Ever. Simply put, they don't stand behind their products. Parts aren't available to fix them. And they do seem to break. Buy a brand that seems to care.

Any of the Whirlpool brands have been solid. So Amana, Whirlpool, Maytag or KitchenAid.

Make sure you have enough height for the bottom freezer. You will need about a 68" high opening.

Frigidaire/Electrolux is OK in side by sides but we have had some issues with the bottom freezers.

GE is owned by Chinese Haier

And friends don't let friends buy LG or Samsung

Just be forewarned, no one has much in inventory right now. We are seeing lots of stuff dating mid October or later
