Would you “un trade” if the other guy was unhappy?
I'm easy, I'd trade back. I've taken back a few high end knives that I've sold, even with obvious buyer's remorse. Life's too short, give the young man a break and a lesson.

Tough decision but nothing wrong with being a nice guy and reversing the deal so long as you're sure the rifle hasn't been abused or parts removed or even if there's any chance the rifle was used in a crime. I've sold several firearms online and only once did the guy want to try and reverse the deal. It was one of those SW air light revolvers in 357 magnum and I suspected the guy fired and decided it wasn't the gun for him which is the exact reason why I sold it.

When it comes to guns, that is a hard no on the swap back. You have no idea what he has done with it.This message has been edited. Last edited by: doublecorona,

No, I would not undo the trade. He had every chance before and during the trade to ask if it was original. You clearly stated which parts were original and which were not. He should have carefully read your ad. He got home and for some reason regretted his decision, but that’s life. I bought a guitar once, that was advertised as American made. It wasn’t, but I should have educated myself enough to know the difference. It was an important life lesson.

I traded SIG pistols (two different models) with a respected member of SIGforum. We both decided that we liked our original ones better, so we agreed to un-trade.

Based on your description of the transaction I'd say your under no obligation to take it back. Based on my own values, I'd undo it (as long as it's in the same condition) just to put it behind me and go on with my life. Doesn't seem like a big enough deal to ever have to think about again.
It sounds like he liked the gun until he showed it to a buddy and they critiqued the build. I would do what was best for me and not give it another thought. It's a kid who doesn't even know what he really wants.

If you like the trade better than what you traded, which you must, then no. If it is nearly a wash, then maybe. Certainly under NO obligation to trade back. Consider giving the kid a break, which you must be doing by creating this post.

I would tell him that if he makes the drive, you'll allow the swap back, provided that he can give you 15-30 minutes to explain the rifle to him. I'd take the opportunity to educate him, if you think he truly didn't understand what he was getting.
I can see a young inexperienced guy reading your post with "xyz trigger" and "abc charging handle", etc., and not really understanding what that meant. For example, there are factory rifles that have Magpul parts listed-he may not have understood that you made the changes.
I'm assuming you didn't put a worse trigger on it-explain to him the changes you made and why. And then if it's not a big deal to you and he still wants to, undo the swap.

I'm going with trade is final, kid has an opportunity to learn a valuable lesson.
If you were to swap back inspect the heck out of it. It's a known scammer tactic to swap in broken or inferior parts (or in the shipping world a completely different worn out unit). I don't think that's what's going on here, just immaturity, but something to watch out for.

This, and the posts hitting on this line of thinking are worth paying attention to, IMO. Yes, probably he did nothing with it, but you can't know sure and you can get to wonder about it the rest of your ownership of that gun, maybe only thinking about it when you entertain the thought of selling or trading it down the line.
For a friend who I know and trust? Sure, I don't want to stick you with a gun you don't want, because our friendship is more important. Some random kid on a local gun trader forum? Doesn't move the needle for me, and this way, I don't have to wonder.

Really, that's what it sounds like to me. Kid was happy with it until he got home and started sending his buddies pictures and one of them hit him with the "you traded a what for that? You should see if he'll trade you back." It's got that "someone crapped on my new shiny" feel to it, basically. Re-reading the original post, and subsequent OP replies, I kind of get the feeling it's a modern black rifle and this kid has that one friend who knows everything and when he didn't get the nod of respect and approval because it wasn't Brand X or his friend had a chance to flex all his knowledge with the idiotic "it's not all original, he swapped out parts on it" nonsensee, it crushed him. My short stint at a gun store taught me that I don't know shit, and the guy with the bad breath, Insane Clown Posse t-shirt, and the Crocs with cutesy little tchotchkies sticking out of the holes is a fucking expert. That guy? He's everywhere.
I get the posts about karma and being a nice guy and easygoing and all that, but if bdylan is right, reversing the trade only shows the kid he can do this with other people, and maybe the next time, it's drama-laden problems or someone who isn't a nice, easygoing guy.

Unless you know what he did with it while he had it, I wouldn’t take it back.

I had a coworker (who was a reserve cop, BTW) that bugged me incessantly to sell him a 1911 I was thinking of selling off. He claimed it was his dream pistol. Against my better judgement, I sold it to him. He contacted me about a week later and wanted to give me the gun back and have me return his money. No problem with the gun except he really had no idea how to operate it and was pretty much afraid of it. I politely refused and pointed out I wasn't WalMart and I didn't have a return desk not to mention the sale paperwork had already been filed with the state. I suggested he investigate how to properly operate the gun and conquer his fears or post it online and sell it to the next guy. Was he naive? Probably. Is it up to me to indulge his naiveté? Heck no. Call it a learning opportunity.

Same principle applies
This is where I am at. Unless I know the person personally, no way would I trade back, ESPECIALLY on a firearm. Every time I sold something I always told the person to check it over and see if you really want it and it is what you need/want. After that, it is their own.

I would be in the camp of "Once you leave with it, it's yours."
The "I'm just a dumb little kid" posture is a no go. He had to prove he is an adult to own a firearm.

Honest question for those leery of taking the gun back because "you don't know what he did with it".
Would you have the same concern(s) regarding the gun it was traded for?
