Thanks for making that call. Good decision.

If such a thing exists: Probably so. He is, or was, an HVAC contractor. He installed the black pipe for our gas clothes dryer. (Previous owner had run semi-rigid copper from the black pipe going to the water heater, up, across the ceiling, and down the wall on the other side. Not exactly code.)

Looking at the picture of the guy pumping gasoline into a plastic trash can...

That's mind-numbingly stupid.

Those are non sparking tools, according to the link the anti static are plastic.

That's beyond stupid. I was going to make a comment on that, but it's a level of stupid beyond my comprehension.

After (not quite a) hurricane Sandy, I saw a guy with two big containers like this full of gas in the back of his truck. Eek

Stupid yes.

But people here so eagerly falling in line with "big brother says you must use this type of container" (one that causes you to spill more gas than you ever would with any other type) makes me sad and angry.

That much vapor, sheesh! And I hear large quantities of gas and plastic can make a lot of static electricity.

That guy pumping it had to be high as a kite too.

Might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. That's not something one should mess around with. Fuel vapor is some scary shit.

That guy deserves a serious beating for thinking that was somehow acceptable.

So there is a run on gas in the DFW area today. I filled up yesterday, almost every place today ran out. I was out this evening and saw a 7-11 that had some with a small line so I pulled in for 1/4-1/2 tank. I pump and notice the guy across the way with a whitr work pickup truck with the tool boxes on the side of the bed pumping.....but he's filling up 3-4 55 gallon rubbermaid type garbage cans with open tops in the bed of the truck. Gas station is overpowered with the fumes, you could smell it hundreds of feet away.

So I call the local police non-emergency line and the operator says he'll send someone out. I ask if it was against the law, he said he didn't know. I have a background in transportation and was certified on various hazmat along the way and remember from that and in general something like "not to be transported in unapproved containers". I give description, license plate, etc. I'm still on the phone with them when the first officer gets there and the dispatcher says he hears thr officer radioing for the fire department for a hazmat situation. I parked in another lot and two more police cars showed up along with a fire engine, so apparently they thought it was something worthy of response.

Now, I try to mind my own business and that has served me well for a long time but the fumes were so strong and it just looked like an explosion waiting to happen. I wouldnt put it past someone to light up a cigarette in the area either being a dumbass or not seeing/realizing what was going on....or any other item that could cause ignition. There was a ton of people there, probably a 10 car line on each entrance to the station along with all pumps full. It wasnt the fact that he was being an asshole by getting 150+ gallons of gas either. For me it was that selfishness and putting everyone there in danger, along with who knows on the roads or where he was going after. No idea what they are going to do but something tells me he just wasted hundreds of dollars on gas.

So was it a good call? I think so. You decide though.

mebbe he was getting fuel for generators an sump pumps... jaaxe I'm???

Yep. People who work in petro-chem use them all the time.

I hate those cans. But the plastic used in a trash can or a plastic storage tub won't withstand any lengthy exposure to gasoline. The plastic will either dissolve or become brittle and crack. Some in pretty short order. You can find 55 gallon drums that can hold gasoline. But a garbage can from the local store is NOT one.

I'd be really surprised if even the idiotic CARB compliant gas cans could spill anywhere near as much as a 50 gallon trash can or a rubbermaid tote in the bed of a truck. To start with, they only hold 5 gallons.

The CARB cans suck; this is true. But it isn't the safety that sucks, it is the pouring. And if you are going to carry fuel on public roads, I am in favor of some kind of approval process. UL, State, SAE, some organization with knowledge and analysis to give some level of regard to public safety.

I wonder if a 55 gallon trash can would have problems associated with free surface area (sloshing).

It would be easy for someone to test. Load up some 55 gallon trash cans with water. Drive around. Let us know the results.

I use to haul 55 gallon steel barrels on my 16 foot utility trailer to water my trees. Even with a top on, it will slush out.

Ever started a brush pile on fire by adding about a 16 ounces of gas and let it set for a minute. Then throw something burning into it and watch the brush pile lift off the ground a few inches. Big Grin

Awhile ago, my son wanted to borrow my pickup truck, line the back bed with plastic, fill it with hot water and got to the drive in with Tiki torches. He was going to back into a spot, set up the torches for intermission, and jump in the back be with a buddy. Figured it would be a great way to pick up ladies. I had to use the truck that night, so he didn't do it. Having never tested the idea, we never found out if it would have been a great way to pick up ladies.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure lots of water would have sloshed out on the way.

Uhhh, well, you should probably be happy that he never did try that. I don't know what size pickup truck you have, but just throwing out a rough estimate, a six foot bed could probably hold close to 450 gallons of water. An eight foot bed could hold something like 570 gallons. That's over 4,000 and 5,000 pounds respectively. Good luck with that.

Even if you cut those numbers in half you're still looking at a lot of weight for the bed of a pickup truck.
