What did you end up paying?

Out of curiosity, I looked around online briefly, and saw basically the same thing I saw when I was seriously looking a couple years back... Within a reasonable distance of me, 05-06s with 150k-275k miles are still going for $11k-15k. Ones under 150k in good shape are $15k-$20k.

The ones under $10k are busted or rusted.

I couldn't justify $11k+ just for a backup vehicle for occasional truck things.

The truck market in general, even used trucks, has gotten real wacky over the past decade. I used to be a truck only guy, but abandoned that in the mid-2010s when I was no longer willing to pay modern truck prices (and fill the tanks), since I don't need truck capabilities most of the time.

I paid $7k. Truck had 18X,xxx miles. LBJs and timing belt were done around 150k, IIRC.

It took a lot of searching and a ton of patience. I was really close on another deal a few months before this one came up, Friday night we agreed to meet at 9:00am. 8:15am the guy updated his ad to "sold". It worked out for the best, this is a better version of the truck.

OP's new Tundra is a beauty. I got a 2000 Tundra 4WD soon after they were introduced. I have just over 100,000 on it now. Still smooth and quiet. Still my favorite of the pick ups I've owned...

Question for you, Mike. A few years ago, I wanted to buy the Tacoma that you were selling, but when I tried it on for size, the leg room in the driver's seat would not accommodate my 36.5" inseam leg length.

Does this model Tundra eliminate that problem?

still have my 2000 Access cab, V8 4x4 SR5

208K on it now, but I don't drive it much anymore

drove it like a slot car as a daily driver for 10 yrs, avg about 18mpg, and very comfortable ride,

did have to replace part of the front 4x parts, basically whatever the slider thing that engages when you push the button

and the coil packs starting failing at about 200K, so I replaced them all

otherwise basic maintenance,

rust is starting to show, basically from teh roads being brined, frame is good so far (I Think)

Another limiting factor is that tons of these are sold to friends and family and never hit the market. They know the history and who doesn't want a cool older truck with legendary reliability.

Took me a few months to find one ~3.5 years ago. Ended up with a 1 owner 2004, 4x4, Limited Crew Cab with 98k miles for ~$12,000. Body and paint was a little rough but the frame is rust free.

I'm 6'5" with 34" inseam and I'm comfortable driving it. Not a much room as the current 1/2 ton trucks but compared to the Tacoma's the seat sits a lot higher off the floor.

I loved by 05 Tundra doublecab limited. Still miss teh handling and ride. only had 100K on it but it needed struts timing belt, rack and pinion was going out. the list of things that needed to be fixed was three pages long and I was hearing an occasional clunking noise when I shifted into drive. So I traded it in

Mike will answer but in my post I mentioned I sold my 04 Tundra to my son and he fits very comfortably in it at 6'-5" with 36" inseam. The 1st gen Tundras are much roomier than a Tacoma and the seats are more chair like rather than like sitting in a go cart.


No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Thought of this thread today when I was behind a 95/96 Tacoma that looked like showroom condition, probably better than new. I was stunned.


I'm trying to buy a Tundra, but so far any listings that are real (not dealer bait) are north of the milage I'm willing to go for. (or newer $35k ones)

Congrats on a beautiful truck- an Excellent choice and color to boot… phantom gray. I inherited my 03 from my father before he passed. Currently at 91k on the clock (actual). I’ve seen exactly 3 others in the wild, now 4 with yours. To me, gen 1 Tundras represent the best of the lineage.



The gen 1 Tundra looks more like it’s Tacoma sized (and indeed shares its lines) when parked next to just about any modern full sized pickup but still manages to blow them all away in terms of actual ground clearance.



The 4.7 is one of Toyotas greatest motors ever with the possible exception of the 4.0 V8 found in Lexus offerings as well as some models in Japan. After the V6 turbo engine failure debacle, it was announced that a turbocharged version of the 4.0 V8 will be under the hood of 26 and beyond Tundras. While the 4.7 is saddled with a timing belt rather than a chain, it has proven to be bombproof as long as owners keep up with timing belt replacement parameters.

Inspect often for signs of rust; I assume you practiced due diligence in the pre-sale inspection and checked the frame for signs of it. The greatest overall flaw in the gen 1 tundras as well as other models of the day (primarily the Tacoma, 4Runner, and Sequoia) was the poor quality Dana steel used in frames and assorted crossmember parts. Mine has catastrophic rust that ironically timed with your post I will be dealing with in less than 2 weeks at literally the only shop I could find that would even touch it. I’m looking forward to my truck being work-worthy again.

I think this truck would offer a little more range front to back and the seat sits a little taller in the cab versus the Tacoma, but I suspect it would still be a bit of a pickle for you to get in and out of.

I wear 36” inseam and have the same problem with the Tacoma, no legroom. I had a 2005 Tundra Access (extended) cab. It had enough room, but none really to spare. There was a trailer brake controller mounted in front of and a bit below my right knee. In the collision that totaled it my knee and the brake controller tried to occupy the same space.

They may have announced that but 2026's are still powered by the 3.4 turbo V6. Maybe for 2027 or 2028?
