Or a pretty high price if it's indeed not what it was described, as claimed in those posts.

Help me out here, please Gentlemen.

Being very deaf, I can't make out what the commentator is saying about Doc Holliday and his 'pinky finger' and what follows.

But I DO hear him mention left hand. This is a tintype image, of a kind that did NOT use any kind of negative, so ALL tin-types are actually reverse images of the reality. This accounts for all the Civil War photos of soldiers and the like with the locks of their rifles on the wrong side, or, later, in the case of the famous image of William Bonnie, the supposition that he was left-handed. Easily proven to be a fallacy, as the first left-hand loading gate Winchester has yet to be made.

TIA

The narrator says that Holliday is wearing a “gambler’s” ring on his left pinky finger.

I cannot, however, determine what that refers to other than, perhaps, it was something gamblers commonly wore. A Google search mostly turns up references to some sort of modern game, I believe.

According to the closed captions on the video he is mentioning on 'the left arm on the pinky finger there's a gambler's ring which he was known to wear' and then he goes on to talk about the picnic tintype.

Yes, tintype images are reversed, so that is Holliday's right hand, not his left. The narrator simply made a mistake by saying that it's his left hand. However, you'll notice that the narrator did not say that Holliday was known to wear a pinky ring on his left hand. He said only that Holliday was known to wear such a ring. I don't imagine that the narrator is a photography expert. It appears he's employed by the auction house, so, probably he has a more general knowledge of the items auctioned by his employer, and has no detailed knowledge of 19th century photographic processes.

Take a look here, about two-thirds of the way down the page

Note the closeups from the movie Tombstone.
quote:
He doesn’t overdo his jewelry, sometimes wearing a diamond ring on his right ring finger. It’s mostly worn when he is gambling, as it would get in the way during gunfights and is flashy enough to fit the gambler persona he has built for himself. He evidently won or fought for the ring during the opening poker game against Ed Bailey. The ring, however, doesn’t look like the rough Ed’s style, so Doc had likely offered it as his own bet before winning it back.
The impression I get from all of this (the ring in the photograph and the ring in the movie) is that this detail in the film stemmed from the research of Holliday by the film's costume designer, so, this detail came from some historical documentation, and not just out of thin air. Perhaps it came from one of those who knew Holliday intimately and who had biographies written while they were still alive. I'm thinking of Wyatt Earp and Bignose Kate, and of the two, I think that this detail likely came from his common law wife, Bignose Kate. Who would know better than she? I read Stuart Lake's biography of Wyatt Earp many years ago. I do not recall such a detail being mentioned in that book.

Note the ring on Kilmer's right hand ring finger:

BTW, IIRC, some ferrotype (tintype) cameras were constructed in such a way that as soon as the picture was taken, the photographic plate automatically dropped into a vessel containing the developing chemicals. Tintypes were the Polaroids of their day- quick and inexpensive.

One of the great things about movies like this where they really focus on the details is that there's always new things to see and learn. Even years after the movie comes out.

Its interesting that they dont look like the typical photos of that era. They're more like snapshots instead of a formal, rigid pose.

If Wyatt was in that photo you would see the auction price skyrocket. Great historical photo find. 4 years ago I was in Phoenix, rented a car and took a road trip to Tombstone. I spent over 10 hours ust walking around and taking it all in. It was an experience.
