So I've decided I am going to switch to an iPhone, and intend to get an 11 Pro.

Question is, since iPhone 12 is on the horizon, and I don't necessarily need latest and greatest, should I just hold off until the 12 drops to get an 11?

I know Apple doesn't drop any prices on a model until the new one releases. How much savings would I be looking at on an 11 Pro when the 12 releases? I assume the 12 will be essentially the same price as the 11 is now.

Buy the 11 Pro now? Wait for the 12 to release and then buy an 11 Pro? Or just buy a 12?

First thing that I look at it is ease of use and features I need. I am not excited about learning new configurations. Price to me is secondary. The other thing to consider is how long you plan to keep it and how often you use it.

The XS only dropped $100 since the 11 came out. So who knows.

Supposed to be in Sept but the rona may have pushed it back a couple of months.

I guess I would get one now unless you live somewhere with 5g and you want that. I doubt there will be much savings for a while after the release

I got two X models, 256 GB, one each for wife and self, for $400.00 lower than original MSRP, after the 11 was released.

That's $400.00 each, total saving of $800.00 for two of them.

The release of the iPhone 12 may mess with the paradigm of discounting previous models. Its rumored the 12 will not ship with any accessories (i.e. no power brick, cable, earbuds, etc), yet it will likely still be north of $1k. So who knows how that will be perceived by buyers who might have been looking to upgrade to the 12. One theory is more iPhone owners will simply stick with their current models until Apple does something to pull the price down on the 12. Add to that that a lot of owners may stick to what they have given the current economic conditions. Long story short, who knows what the release of the next iPhone will bring.

Personally I always buy the certified refurb from Apple. Saves me a decent amount. Wife has the X and I still have a 7. I'm interested to see what the new release will do the prices. I could get an X but I'm hesitant to spend that type of money on myself for a phone.

With the 5G stuff coming out 'soon', I just went with the cheaper SE. Runs great, take awesome photos (compared to my 6S Plus) and was inexpensive. I'll see how the 5G rollout goes in the next year or two and adjust as needed.

This is another rather important point of discussion. Do not get caught up in the 5G game at this point. The hucksters are selling the heck out of 5G, yet in reality, we're likely a long way away from it being available to most of us. Based on what I've read, I'd be shocked if a 'majority' of us have continual access to 5G prior to sometime in 2022.

There is going to be smaller 5.4” model in the lineup with the new ones. We are so close to the new roll out, I’d wait it out. I think the 5.4” model looks ideal for being compact. It’s going to be $599.

I still get by fine with a 6. I did buy a few 8’s last Winter/Christmas for friends & family.

They all work just fine. I’m happy staying a few models behind the bow wave.

Then again, I don’t fancy ‘lane monitors’ with new vehicles either.

I can't for the life of me figure out why iPhones are getting bigger and bigger....

I have to carry one on my person every day and crawl around under and on houses and in chimneys and bigger is not better...

I just upgraded to the new smallest one they make and it is a half an inch bigger than my old 6se or what ever it was... this is a 2020se. the only amazing thing about his new phone is the charging plugs for the old one work on this new one...

Take a look at the new SE.

One of the features that I really like on the iPhone 8 and later models is wireless charging. Just lay the phone down on the charging pad, no wires to plug in, super convenient (yes, it will still charge the old way, but I only use that in the car and it rarely needs to be charged in the car).

If I did not already have an X, I would grab one of the new SE models in a heartbeat.

That's been Apple's pricing policy for a while. The new one comes out and they drop the price on existing models by $100.

Were there any other reasons for this much of a discount? Like add a line, trade in, new contract, switching carrier, etc. or was this a flat out discount available to anyone?

The X is 2 generations/models old, there is an XS model between it and the 12.

I have an iPhone X, and also an Apple iCloud account. But I can’t directly access the iCloud features (e.g., iCloud backup) with my iPhone X. If the iPhone 12 does support 5G, and in enables direct iCloud access, I’ll probably pop for it.

I’ve long had Sprint service. Now, with the merger, T-Mobile service. T-Mobile already had the best US 5G network. Sprint’s huge nation-wide swath of beachfront 2.4 GHz spectrum will make it even better.

Are you a veteran by chance? 10% off if you buy via apple.com veteran store. BUT for the phones you need to get it “plain Jane” - not preset to a carrier. If you select a carrier when ordering the discount doesn’t get applied.

NO worries, they are unlocked and work with any carrier just put your existing SIM card in or get one from your carrier.

If not, refurb is another good way to go. 10-15% off new and products only differ by the box they come in. Same quality, same warranty, can get AppleCare+ extended warranty if you wish.

The Xs offered almost nothing over the X except the eSIM.

For me the eSIM is a godsend because I now have an international data rooming account with GigSky that lets me buy plans for anywhere in the world at a very reasonable price. All you do is turn off data roaming on your main account (Verizon for me) and activate it on the data account. The main line is still open for calls and SMS text, but routes iMessage and FaceTime through the data account. Just have to remember not to place or answer any calls on the main line, and avoid SMS texts, since those are at international roaming rate. All data use is on the roaming plan at like $10-$15 a GB.

Xs to 11 Pro I wasn't sure but but the better battery life, 3 lens camera, and some other stuff made it worthwhile. And "this one goes to 11" for guitar players is a running joke.

Now, I'd wait for the 12, and probably get the smaller one that is more like the size of a 6/7/8 with squared sides like the 5. I don't need a huge one that doesn't fit in a front jeans pocket.

5G is regional but major cities will have it. It's similar to the 5 coming out at the beginning of LTE and not being able to handle all of the different channels. It will take time and later iPhones to handle all 5G channels in all markets, but it will happen.

I'm on the Apple Store upgrade plan, so I can trade up after 12 payments. Funny thing is you only have to give them the phone and not the accessories, so I have plenty of EarPods, chargers, and cables. I use a Mophie dual phone wireless pad at home, and travel chargers when I'm on the road. Griffin makes a 3 port USB travel charger with 2.1 amps per port which is about perfect.
