Oh absolutely, and I'm talking about the fresh ones. I like them so much better than deep-fried.

I'm stuck in Milpitas for now. There's Vietnamese everywhere. I am liking them quite a bit. Haven't tried their food yet but this will help me out.

The fresh ones are where ingredients shine, especially when the basil or, mint is super fragrant. I also like dipping in nước chấm sauce over the peanut or, satay sauce. My sister used to make them, I should ask her next time they're up here....

Nope not married, dated a few and escaped with my life & sanity. Big Grin

I have been making these at home for years, the last ones I made were the bomb. I used some Korean BBQ sauce on thin pork steaks and a dip made with hoisin and peanut sauce

Very easy to do, I have a spray bottle in the cupboard that I use to spray water on the rice wrappers

Ha! I grew up on the San Jose side of Landess. I know the area very well. Lots of very good restaurants of all ethnicities in the area.

The one on capitol Ave ? Dang this thread making me homesick. Grew up in that hood 70’s 80’s 90’s. Parents live nearby and going to visit them from Livermore was a traffic nightmare. Left the state in 2021

That's the one! My mom just ate there with her friends on Saturday. Packed, just like any other day and parking in that small lot is a pain. Service is fast though and portions are still generous.

You're a Florida Man now, so I envy you. Perhaps one day... Big Grin

We've got a few good ones here in the IAH/N Houston area.
I'm partial to just grab a good bánh mì

Houston might be the largest Viet community in the US rivaling Orange County in CA, you guys have miles of solid eating spots.

That definitely is eating it wrong. But I'm surprised because I don't think I needed anyone to tell me to put it in the soup. Maybe I just saw other people doing it the first time.

Vietnamese sandwiches are definitely a must try. They're like a specialty unto themselves. I was fortunate to have a bakery open up near work in Hayward. Even fortunate I tried a sandwich.

It's a real culinary experience where you have separate distinctive mouthfeel in terms of crunchiness and different flavors that you taste in your mouth at the same time.

In the Bay Area, there were a lot less Vietnamese sandwich shops than Pho places. I only know of the one and I think it was a small locally owned chain.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I eventually started putting the stuff in the soup, but still wasn't sure what was right. Didn't want to offend the Vietnamese foodie gods.

You thinking of Lee's Sandwiches? They've built themselves quite a mini-empire with 60 odd locations in 4-5 states.

My favorite banh mi shop is Doc Huong Sandwiches in East San Jose on Story Rd; I make sure to have a Viet Iced Coffee since the driving commute in any direction is such a bear.

I can see how this area is appealing. Also can see the other side.

When you want to come visit we have small trailer outside that is like your own room. Pho is on me.

Wife mentioned this place as we passed it yesterday. See it everyday and neither of us have tried it. Looks like it would be good.

I have a theory that if they were to rename Pho to Cowboy Brisket & Steak soup they would double their sales. It works out for me though, because I don't have to wait for a table. Lots of people don't know what their missing.

I have a few SIGs.

We have a somewhat large Vietnamese population here in St Petersburg. I have a local favorite place. I wasn’t a fan at first but a coworker converted me. Their homemade chili oil is amazing.

The beef stew and bread is amazing.

Very French with Vietnamese influence.

The woman that brings me the bowls of it keeps trying to get me to marry her.

It’s a deal. Only way my retired folks can afford to stay is their prop 13 tax base from 1971.

Also, coliseum pizza the next block down is a winner if you need pizza at midnight or can only afford to buy by the slice (at least used to be open late).

Lee's isn't the best, plenty of single-door operations do better BUT, it does satisfy when you're looking for an inexpensive sando that's not a gut-bomb like a big reuben or, a stacked-up Italian. Most of the locations have a handful of Asian/Vietnamese snack items that I like so, they're an easy stop when I'm doing a road-trip or, have a bunch of appointments to hit.
