Balzé HalzéSunday's Crossword Puzzle in the New York Times
On the first day of Hanukkah, this is the crossword puzzle put out in the New York Times. A silhouette of a swastika:
Coincidence?

Balzé HalzéYou don't see the obvious silhouette of a swastika? It screams out at you.

You can point it out without calling the member blind. I had to do a double take myself.

Ronin1069I guess I see it now…and although I’m no fan of The NY Times (as discussed in a recent thread where I talked about canceling my subscription), it is difficult for me to believe that The NY Times did this intentionally.

Balzé HalzéI noticed just now when I look at the image up close like on my PC screen, it's not as obvious, but "from a distance" like looking at it on my phone's screen (when I first saw it), it's quite a bit more obvious.

Lefty SigMaybe not intentionally, but the editor that let it through should be fired.
"Despite the online speculation, Jordan Cohen, executive director of communications at the Times, told Newsweek that the only intentional aspect of the crossword's appearance was its symmetry.
"This is a common crossword design: Many open grids in crosswords have a similar spiral pattern because of the rules around rotational symmetry and black squares," Cohen said in a statement."

OregonCoincidence? Probably. I have a hard time believing that there's a subversive neo-nazi crossword nerd underground.

I will respectfully disagree. Intent should still count for something.
As much as I like to see the NYT get hammered, I am tired of everything being labeled as a "dog whistle" or somehow having surreptitious meanings.

I also think this is inadvertant. It would be hard to imagine the NYT doing this intentionally. And, it doesn't scream swastika to my eyes anyway.

Southern RebelI guess I am immune to swastika images. When I first saw it, all I saw was a crossword puzzle.
It's kinda like people seeing clouds that "look just like ....". Yeah, I can sorta see what they see after they point it out to me, but usually I see clouds!

Yup, not obvious at all.
It was only after it was described did I "sort of" see it...maybe
I guess if someone were looking to be offended, it would be more obvious

WaterburyBobIt's not a very good swastika image if it was done intentionally.

Reminds of the MS Wingdings Font controversy from years ago
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wingdings quote:
In 1992, only days after the release of Windows 3.1, it was discovered that the characters "NYC" (New York City) in Wingdings was rendered as a skull and crossbones symbol, Star of David, and thumbs up gesture. This was often said to be an antisemitic message referencing New York's large Jewish community.[8] Microsoft strongly denied this was intentional, and insisted that the final arrangement of the glyphs in the font was largely random. "NYC" in the later-released Webdings font was intentionally rendered as eye, heart, and city skyline, referring to the I Love New York logo.[9])

Another example of spending one’s life looking for something to be offended by. I know swastikas and I would have never noticed it if it hadn’t been pointed out.
And if Hitler, Himmler, et al., are still looking on, they can once more take some gratification that although they were defeated militarily, they still can score one victory after another in the battles to influence people and never be forgotten.

FlashlightboyWifey plays the NYT crossword all the time. Weird shapes and patterns are common and this is a nothing sammie.
Different people come up with the puzzles and the layouts are dependent on the what puzzle maker his in mind aka long answer, intersecting answer, phrases contained in the puzzle once it's completed and so on.
Saying the NYT purposefully allowed a swastika in, IMO, is fantasy and conjecture by people who aren't puzzle players.
