On the first day of Hanukkah, this is the crossword puzzle put out in the New York Times. Wow. Is this in retaliation to the layoffs? Someone else is gonna lose their job… He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.

You don't see the obvious silhouette of a swastika? It screams out at you. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

You can point it out without calling the member blind. I had to do a double take myself.

Do now, was the same for me as Ronin, was looking at the clues for something in those that was a problem...

I guess I see it now…and although I’m no fan of The NY Times (as discussed in a recent thread where I talked about canceling my subscription), it is difficult for me to believe that The NY Times did this intentionally. ___________________________ All it takes...is all you got. ____________________________ For those who have fought for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

I noticed just now when I look at the image up close like on my PC screen, it's not as obvious, but "from a distance" like looking at it on my phone's screen (when I first saw it), it's quite a bit more obvious. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

Left-Handed, NOT Left-Winged! |
Maybe not intentionally, but the editor that let it through should be fired. "Despite the online speculation, Jordan Cohen, executive director of communications at the Times, told Newsweek that the only intentional aspect of the crossword's appearance was its symmetry. "This is a common crossword design: Many open grids in crosswords have a similar spiral pattern because of the rules around rotational symmetry and black squares," Cohen said in a statement." https://www.newsweek.com/new-y...les-swastika-1768153

Coincidence? Probably. I have a hard time believing that there's a subversive neo-nazi crossword nerd underground.
I will respectfully disagree. Intent should still count for something. As much as I like to see the NYT get hammered, I am tired of everything being labeled as a "dog whistle" or somehow having surreptitious meanings. ___________________________________________ "Why is it every time I need to get somewhere, we get waylaid by jackassery?" -Dr. Thaddeus Venture

I also think this is inadvertant. It would be hard to imagine the NYT doing this intentionally. And, it doesn't scream swastika to my eyes anyway. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Holy cow.... when I pulled this up, before even reading the text, that jumped right out of the image at me. I guess I am immune to swastika images. When I first saw it, all I saw was a crossword puzzle. It's kinda like people seeing clouds that "look just like ....". Yeah, I can sorta see what they see after they point it out to me, but usually I see clouds!

Yup, not obvious at all. It was only after it was described did I "sort of" see it...maybe I guess if someone were looking to be offended, it would be more obvious No, Daoism isn't a religion

It's not a very good swastika image if it was done intentionally. "If Gun Control worked, Chicago would look like Mayberry, not Thunderdome" - Cam Edwards

Another example of spending one’s life looking for something to be offended by. I know swastikas and I would have never noticed it if it hadn’t been pointed out. And if Hitler, Himmler, et al., are still looking on, they can once more take some gratification that although they were defeated militarily, they still can score one victory after another in the battles to influence people and never be forgotten. ► 6.4/93.6

Wifey plays the NYT crossword all the time. Weird shapes and patterns are common and this is a nothing sammie. Different people come up with the puzzles and the layouts are dependent on the what puzzle maker his in mind aka long answer, intersecting answer, phrases contained in the puzzle once it's completed and so on. Saying the NYT purposefully allowed a swastika in, IMO, is fantasy and conjecture by people who aren't puzzle players.
