According the the specs at Apples website, there is x2 optical zoom in and 2x optical zoom out. There are three lenses. There is digital zoom as well if you care to use it.

My son's XR facial recognition unlock feature functions 100% in a completely darkened room. I thought that was pretty cool.

Using a lens of a different curve to zoom in vs. cropping down. I think that's optical zoom as I understand it. Just think changing lenses vs changing lens distance.

I just went in to look at the new 11 Pro Max. It'll be delivered sometime this week. Same size as my 7+ with more screen real estate and Qi charging (like I care).

My advice is to not go in to look.

I think you will find wireless charging is a nice feature. Invest $20 in a charging stand and then all you need do is put the phone on it with no need to mess with wires. Deal breaker one way or the other?... probably not but still IMO it's worthwhile.

Well, I’ll be shipped in dip. By that definition, the old Keystone movie camera had a zoom lens! I learn something new every day…

We got our 11 Pro’s Friday. I actually wasn’t planning on upgrading this time. I switched us back to Verizon though and got some crazy incentives. Very happy so far. No issues

Got my 11 Pro Max 2 days ago. So far so good. I got a new Jeep two days before that...it’s been a good week. This phone costs more than a MacBook Pro, that is just crazy to me. I traded in my iPhone X and got $400 off so that was good.

the new apple phones are truly technical works of art.

There's a heck of a lot of technology in there.

I started with an AT&T bag phone with about 30 minutes a month time. That was about 30 years ago. Who, other than Dick Tracy, would have believed the power of my Watch Series 4 coupled with my iPhone X (soon to be a 11 Pro).

Mind numbing.

One thing I don’t like about the use of facial recognition, it’s automatic, I like that I must enter a code or pattern in order for my phone to open. What’s to say that someone comes up and hits me from behind knocks me silly and dazed, takes my phone and puts it up to my face to unlock it?

iOS 13 killed my shared grocery list with the wife that we use several times a day. Annoyed. And I don’t see a way to update apps any longer? They will update when they want to I guess? I used to force update my apps at least once a week.

Go to the App Store, tap your profile in the upper right. All the apps you own will appear there if there are updates.

One of the best features is the update to CarPlay. The new screen layout is nice and supports HomeKit Garage doors no more carryinga remote or programming a car (or bike if that is your ride).

You don't have to use it at all. You do not even have to set it up if you choose not to. You can just use a pass code only if so desired.

You can also individually set it just for unlocking the phone, just for the iTunes and App Store, Apple Pay or Password auto filling or any combination of those.

Endeavor to persevere.

That could happen. Also, if police confiscate your phone during and arrest, they could hold it to your face to open it without your permission although I'm not sure if that would fall under 4th amendment violations or not.

Some things you just need to live with. I think if I where hit in the head and knocked out, someone opening my phone would be pretty far down my list of concerns. As already pointed out, just disable face ID if you are concerned about this sort of thing.

Will face recognition open the phone if you hold a photo of the person’s face up to the phone?

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I have an XS that is still going strong, but the cameras on the Pro had me pause.

Nope. It requires an image in 3 dimensions.

Yep, this technology has come a long way. I don't know what else is on the horizon but I'll bet in a few years there will be additional methods of identifying people. Retina scan? say a secret word in your voice? Phone detects your odor kinda like a dog does? I'm sure we will continue to be amazed.

I've put several different face scans in my phone to account for reading glasses and hats. I need to try one with sun glasses.

My XS does this already without adding anything; reading glasses, sunglasses, Boonie hat, etc. I don’t know how the system gets past my completely mirrored Costa’s, but it does.
