No one likes the LPVOs? When I read the question the first thinkthat popped in my head was the Vortex Strike Eagle. Not anything like top of the line, but I'd bet it would go the job the OP wants done.

I mentioned a lpvo (leupold 1-4x firedot). It works well but I really just prefer the aimpoints for quick/close and larger diameter scope for precision distance. I haven’t tried it but I’m thinking I’d probably prefer the aimpoint with a magnifier over a lpvo.

I've become far more "all in" when it comes to LPVOs. I've come around to thinking that despite their size and weight disadvantage, the LPV riflescope is the best optic type for use on an AR. At least for me it is, with how I generally use my rifles.

I agree with BBMW's suggestion. For $500 or so the Vortex 1-6x24 Strike Eagle with one of their 2" cantilever mounts is a hard package to beat for the money. That offers more flexibility than a fixed 4x power ACOG like the TA31G I have on one of my rifles. Frankly the only reason I've kept it on that rifle and not switched it to another LPVO is just due to wanting a little variety...and that I bought the Trijicon a couple of years ago because I convinced myself that "I wanted it", and then only to have it lie around unused gathering dust for over a year as I used my LPVO-equipped rifles instead. Only after picking up a DD quad upper recently for a Aero lower build did I finally put the TA31 to use, coupled with a set of 45° offset Magpul irons. It's not a bad setup, but a LPVO works better for me and more importantly, my eyes with where they now are at in life.

Bean, it can be as confusing as Hell when you start Googling optics for ARs. I was there a bit ago and went through a mess of optics.
I agree with most here and say Aimpoint. It's very basic but built like a tank. They do have lower priced options all the way up to high priced. Really can't go wrong with one.
I did the prism thing also having a Vortex Spitfire and Spitfire HD Gen 2 3x. They're good but eye relief and FOV are limited. I know those are in your price range but you might not like them.
Will you be shooting longer distances? That's a consideration in your decision.
It's a crowded room when you try to decide on an optic. Good luck.

Acog may not be as bad right now as you think. $899 Black Friday deal. Still higher than you mentioned wanting to pay but if that is really what you are wanting now may be the time.

Bean, that's a helluva price and I'd jump if that's what you really want.
If I had a spare AR that needed an optic, I'd be tempted.
A bit out of your price range but still, you're getting a good optic.

Here's another option and a good price.
I am a fan boy of EoTech so there's that but they are great optics.
Eye relief and FOV are awesome.
Just another option for you to think about.

I find the responses in this thread very confusing.

How can people recommend optics when no one knows what or where he's shooting?

Are all of the optics mentioned great for shooting playing cards in the basement and!
Barn doors in the back forty river bottom?

I have no glass on any fire arm that I own ,so I can't offer any advice.

Is it just me
or does the o.p.
need to qualify / quantify his requirements?

My friend of 42 years gave me a really beautiful, brand new AR for my birthday last month.

I want a Trijicon ACOG. Out of the budget. Not happening. It’s a $1k gun, I’m not putting a $1700 optic on it.

I would like to keep it around $200, but would be willing to spend up to $500 if it was the cocksucker deluxe.

I have spent so many hours googling optics and reviews and I’m now more confused than I could imagine. Almost to the point of “fuck this, iron sights”.

What are your recommendations?

This is what we have to go with Bendable. Some information but not all.
He's looking for recommendations right now and will probably narrow it down after he reads through what others post.
As he states, he's confused because there are a ton of options. Prism, ACOG, red dot, magnified, no magnification, Holographic and more.
I've been down that road also and finally found what I like after some trial and error. He might not like what I like though.

My last was a Vortex Spitfire 3x Prism. I like the fact that it works with or without the battery and does not fuzz like regular red dots. They make a 1x too.

I like the Sig Romeo 5 for an inexpensive red dot.

I have both of the Vortex prisms and they work for sure.
On the 3x model, once zeroed, I was making hits over 300 yards easily with that reticle.
Its a good choice but fixed power and lower FOV.
Of course an ACOG is also and this is just a budget minded choice.

And currently on sale at Cabelas for $249. I think it was $199 last year on BF.

That’s one really nice friend!
Is it light weight with a 16” barrel? 20” heavy barrel?
What type of shooting do you expect use it for? Rapid shots mostly under 100 yards? Banging steel out to 600 yards?
I’ve got more ars than I need. With 1-4, 2-12, 3-18 scopes. I was grouping pretty nice at 647 yards a couple of weeks ago, with my 6.5 Grendel.
There are quite a few scopes out there that try for the sweet spot of doing well close and far. 1-4, 1-6, and 1-8 power.

If you can afford to, I’d say spend a little extra on the site. Buy once…
But more importantly, I’m sure your buddy would appreciate you showing how much you like his gift!

My M4 is used for personal defence. I chose the Trijicon TA44 (1.5×16). I'm very pleased with this optic. No batteries (Fiber Optic and Tritium).

Shoot me an email with your mailing address, Beancooker. I have an Aimpoint PRO for you (just the optic, no mount). Instant Thanksgiving/Late Birthday Karma. It's not new, but it'll get the job done for you. You'll just need to buy a mount for it. That alone will be ~$150-$200 for a quality mount from someone like Bobro or Larue.

That's why I brought up the LPVO. It may be a jack of all trades, master of none type device, but it covers a lot of ground. A "normal" 16" barrel AR is also something of a jack of all trades, master of none type firearm, so mounting that kind of scope on that type of AR makes a lot or sense for whatever use (or uses) he my eventually decide to put it to. If he gets into something specialized where this rifle/optic combo doesn't work, he may want to get a completely separate combo specialized for that purpose (whatever it may be.)

Generous, indeed.
Yet another reason to be thankful for this place.

A Strike Eagle may get the nod for my next optic, either for the 12131 karma AR or maybe on my 336.

Do you need it right now ?

I'm told of a magical place where odd things are sold, often at a good price, and RARE is the time a transaction goes awry.

https://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/350601935

Every once and a while you'll be surprised at the price of an ACOG, Aimpoint, and other stuff. Just be patient, but STRIKE FAST when that opportunity comes along. It's been more than once where I hesitated on a great deal and lost out.
