I've always liked candles, except that sooner or later they always set off the smoke detectors. So much for "atmosphere" at that point. But yeah, they are actually cool - no pun intended.

Yep. I do it each year, and keep the extra stored in little one ounce blocks (I picked up a few molds just for that). You just never know when you might need them.
Big fan of the Townsend's site. Been watching his videos for years. I got my favorite fried chicken recipe from there.

I used to have a beat-up old book published in 1893 IIRC, for the Chicago World's Fair. It had a long article in it about how cities suddenly became dramatically safer after the introduction of...gas lighting. Apparently Paris was the first city to install gas lighting in the early 19th century. That may or may not have been the origin of the phrase "City of Light" to describe Paris.

Wow, you're not kidding. Interesting, entertaining, and touched on peripheral areas also.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
