I may have to try that, but is it really considered freeze-dried? If they have a layer of ice on them, they're not technically dried, more like frozen.
Kinda funny but they are all the same flavor. They are colored and given the scent of a certain flavor to fool your senses but they actually all taste the same.
If you just roll them around on your tongue, the internals will melt away like cotton candy, only quite a bit slower - but not as tangy as the normally-hydrated version - leaving the thin halves of the candy outer shell.
Or, you can just crunch on them and get more of a normal skittle flavor, but still a really different texture.
When I was searching for them in bulk (I've only found small bags from a candy vendor at a couple of recent holiday shows), I also ran across instructions for making them yourself. Pretty sure I can cover the cost of a freeze-dryer if I make enough.
