I occasionally see large stars on the exterior of homes. What's up with this?

A quick google search tells me they mean anything from good luck to witchcraft.

So what's the story? Why do people put these on their homes? Is there a secret club that I should be a part of?

Depends on the region and family history. There are 3 to 4 reasons.

1 family in revolutionary war (this is regional, mostly new england)

2 loss of loved one in military combat

3 quaker signal for safe harbor and hosputality

We don't have a star on our house...right now, but we do have a large one sitting on my mantle. It is in a circle, which is about 2.5' to 3' in diameter, and it is the star in the center of the Texas seal or better known as the "Lone Star."

It isn't actually there right now since we have our Christmas decorations up, but after Christmas, it goes back up.

I always thought it meant a son or daughter was away at war (a black or silver star or anything other than gold). A gold star on the home meant a son or daughter who died in war for his or her country.

As stated, it varies.

In Texas, most of the time, it's a Texas Lone Star thing, like flying the state flag. It's on barns, cut into porch chairs, over the mantle, in framed art, sewn into pillows, you name it, they have some doodad with a star on it. Texans are a very proud sort, of most anything.

And then there's the flags with basic stars that represent kids off to war/serving.

And who knows what else.

Aliens, probably.

Instead of a bumper sticker "My kid is an honor...", they put the kid's star out.

Or not. Razz

never heard of anyone having something outside to denote Rev War service, (but I may be living under a rock!)

most of the Stars I see on houses are just big ones bought for decoration,
you can get them at craft shows etc reasonably priced

Not always just decoration. They sometimes hide large bolts used to help strengthen and tie together a brick structure.

I think they are called anchor bolts?

The revolutionary war, and quaker were pretty specific to ct. Rev war was coastal CT, quaker was more inland.
