The only chance is to put up signs like for a lost dog.

Sounds like grandson is just a bit impulsive.

Rhino is suggesting a course of action that might get the boy to slow down a little, and think before he acts. This is what we call "a teachable moment."

As far as the drone, can’t offer any advice other than to say I’m sure the grandson is bummed, hate to hear that.

Indeed, he is a very intelligent young man but sometimes he can outsmart himself... His mother had straight A's all her life and got her doctorate while holding down a full time job and keeping house for her family.. It appears he will follow in his mom's footsteps, but he needs to remember to think before hitting the ground running Big Grin

His mother will be sure that the teachable moment is well learned.

You're looking for a needle in a haystack. About the only thing you can try is find out where the factory is, most likely that is "home" that is programmed on the drone. Put that coordinate in a gps and put a go to from where it was launched and start walking or driving that line.....

The factory is in China, that would be a pretty long walk. Big Grin

Aaaaaw, poor lil' Johnny was an idiot - parents should rush right out and buy him more expensive shit for him to break / lose. And people wonder why there is an 'entitlement problem' with kids these day. LMFAO...

Heck, I'm worried about spoiling my kids, but even so whenever they have broken things (ipad minis in the case of the girls - one to water, one to stepping on it since the floor seemed like a good place to leave it) they had the wonderful learning opportunity to pay for a replacement themselves. Yes, either paying for it out of their saved money or earning more to pay for it. One even decided NOT to use saved money and to work several weeks for her Grandma to earn the money (washing her dogs, cleaning up dog poop, other chores).

My son had a similar reason for bringing his phone into the shower to listen to music, or do whatever with it since it was "water resistant". After several months of that, it went tits up from the humidity / water exposure. Guess who paid for a replacement??? Not me.

Guess which kids take A LOT better care of their stuff these days..? Wink

^^^^ Thanks, bendable.

That's a great idea.

I found a gps calculator on the internet and got the exact heading from my grandson's location to Bejiing, China.

The search will continue after the nasty weather blows through their location.

It certainly isn't going that far. Most drones have a 20-30 minutes flying time on a full battery. So figure out the speed it travels at and heading, and at least you have an educated search area. Not a terrible search if you have a golf cart, bicycle or other means of transportation.

What if you release an identical drone from the same location under the same conditions, but track it?

Unfortunately, my grandson lives in Minnesota (southwest of Minneapolis) so I'm pretty sure that's not it.

Thanks for looking though kkina.

I have one very similar, but a couple years old. It is not an outside drone. ANY wind whatsoever (even if it's wind is still on the ground), will blow it away. Luckily, I have 500yd+ visibility around my house, or my first & only foray outside would have been the end of the drone. I was trying to take aerial pics of the house & was pushing full blast into the wind & losing ground. It did haul ass with the wind....
It's cool in the basement.

Just a change in the wind of, lets say, 3-4 mph could send it hundreds of yards away from where the first one crashed. Not worth the risk of losing 2 drones instead of one in my opinion.

I'm with RHINOSWO on this. A wise grandfather once told me "Take care of your tools and your tools will take care of you." I still have a lot of his tools with his name and SS# that he engraved on them.

My kids get one freebie, after that they need to figure out a way to pay for the replacement themselves.

In this case, kid gets a drone for Christmas and immediately goes out and loses it. Who's fault is that? It should be a learning experience. Some kids need to slow down a little and think about what they are doing.

I've got a daughter like that. She can't slow down. She's 12 and smart but she walks into streets without looking. She never has a clue as to what's going on around her. Just today, she walked into a room next to my oldest son who was wearing a VR headset. Oldest son smacked her in the face as he had no clue she was there. She had no excuse as he was obviously wearing the headset and playing a game. Her eyes and ears function fine, but she was so wrapped up in what she was doing that she failed to see or hear what was going on. I hope she learns before she gets hit by a car.

Another example. Grandma buys the kids a giant beachball. You guys already know where this is going, don't you? If you guessed Canada, you were right. We're on Lake Huron for the summer and the wind is blowing offshore. Daughter wants me to blow up the beachball and I explain why it wasn't a good day to do it. She tells me she'll only play with it up the driveway. I figure that will be ok since there's 200 feet of trees between there and the beach. Two minutes later, she's crying that the ball is in the water. I ask how and she tells me she took it on the beach and the wind grabbed it. She got my "No shit" look which is remarkably like my "I'm shocked" look, but with laughter.

Maybe I'm cruel, but so far the lowest grade she's earned in school is one B+ during one quarter. She's had the highest GPA in her grade 5 years straight. According to last year's testing in 5th grade, her reading comprehension level was freshman in college and yet some lessons are hard for her to learn. Looking before crossing the road. I can't tell you how many times she's been spanked, talked to, yelled at, grabbed and pulled back from on coming traffic.

I do feel badly for HighZonie's grandson and hopes he finds the drone he lost. Whether he finds it or not, I hope his parents and grandparents encourage him to learn from his mistake.
