Nobody expected him to actually demonstrate "scholarship" or publish or conduct research. He could've lived fat and happy in his cloistered little office, teaching the occasional survey-level General Ed class for lower-division undergrads (who don't care about Sociology any more than they care about Sociologists) and retired comfortably in obscurity.
