That sounds like a lot to me. Nearly 2 per day... that are reported.

Thing is, the police report said most... MOST ... were taken from UNLOCKED cars!

And that is why “truck guns” are moronic for many of us*

*residents of Mayberry, USA excepted.

**Note: referring to firearms that are stored full time in vehicles, not the 20 minutes you stashed your Glock as you went to USPS.

A sentiment I agree with.

It's not just Nashville. We take reports every week about guns taken from vehicles. The only difference is in all of the reports we take the doors are locked....but no broken windows, or pried doors, or any other damage. It amazes me how people leave their guns up for the taking. And some people have no idea when the gun was taken. "I think it was there last week but I don't know."

I posted this in a recent truck gun thread in the Pistols subforum.

On the body carry is best, but there are times when you cannot carry (e.g. going into the post office). For those times, spend the $20.10 for this 16 gauge steel SnapSafe brand lockbox with security cable.

It won't stop someone with tools and time, but it'll stop a quick smash n grab.

I read the thread title as:
686 Gun stolen from car last year in Nashville

Expected a S&W thread.

I have that type of locker in all my vehicles.

Yeah, that surprised me when I first started working in LE.

Similarly, most stolen cars are unlocked cars with the keys left in it.

Gee, that's right. You're not supposed to take your gun into a post office. Whoops !

As it has been discussed before here, 99 percent of all stolen guns come from unlocked vehicles.

A minuscule are stolen from locked vehicles. And a smaller amount of that are stolen from secure storage inside vehicles.

The perps are coyotes. They are looking for easy targets. If the vehicle is locked, they move on to the next. They usually work in pairs and wear hoodies.

This is a large percentage of what I do at my day job.

Since the widespread use of remote keyless entry, I don't see why so many people leave their car unlocked, let alone unlocked with a gun in it. If someone has a gun, you think personal security would be a concern. If it is, why not take the simple step of LOCKING YOUR CAR?

My guess: They got distracted. It's happened to me, though not with a gun in the CRV. I know, how hard is it to hit the button on the fob? Something distracts the driver and they walk away from an unlocked car.

Or they're lazy and/or stupid.

No, people are just dumb. I'm always shocked to see people get out of their running car and go into a conveyance store. I've seen it twice where the car owner came back in saying their car was gone. No shit huh?
Why? Forget the risk part, what's the upside to leaving it running? Are you that lazy? Is your car going to get hot/cold in the three minutes your in the store? Stupid.

There is a 3rd demographic as well - the reckless (little bit of knowledge but wrong conclusion). Some people (I am NOT one of them) don't lock their cars because it's so easy to use a slim jim or break a window and get in anyway Roll Eyes Completely ignoring statistics or the principal of make your belongings harder to steal than your neighbor's.

Probably the same people who don't lock their doors at home because somebody is just going to break a window or kick in a door anyway.

The numbers don't surprise me at all. It's a major metro area with hundreds of thousands of people.

Lock your damn doors.

guns , phones, Ipads, spare change, garage door openers, whole sets of car and house keys, tons of tools,
and with high end car seats , they will take them as well.

they sell the $70.00 seats for $20.00

the flocks of 6 and 8 kids visited tiny town and stole stuff from 20 cars , just a few weeks back.

just pulling on doors to see if they are unlocked

It's not just Tiny Town.

Packs of feral teens roaming neighborhoods/parking lots and pulling on door handles is a major source of vehicle break-ins down here too.

Residents of Mayberry, USA should probably not be excepted. Your neighbors may be wonderful and all, but dirtbags are not confined to the ghetto.

Those days are long gone with almost every recent car having electric locks.

The cabled boxes remind me of the days of the "club". Drivers would install them on the steering wheel and come back to a now empty parking space. Couldn't get the to understand the steering wheel that'smade up of a thim wall aluminum made to bend easily was quickly cut. Whet they would find was the club and a section of the steering wheel on the ground.

Whatever the box is anchored too better be strong. Then metal or worse is not stopping anyone.
