Searched but last thread on the subject was from 2018. Costco vs Discount Tire info from 2023.

I've never bought tires from Costco before but am comparing prices on a set of Michelin Defender LTX tires for my F150. The set is $1300 installed at Discount Tire with a 5% military discount but does not include the road hazard certificates, which would add another $213.

Costco is quoting $1256 which includes installation, which the website says also includes a 5 year road hazard warranty. Their warranty is prorated, where as the Discount Tire certificates are good for 3 years and are for full price of the tire new.

I'm inclined to give Costco a try, although the Discount Tire shop is much closer and I have bought many tires from them and had good results, and used the warranty a couple of times. I may try to get a price match with the Costco quote.

If you have bought tires from Costco could you please describe your experience with them and also if you've had to use their road hazard warranty please let me know how that went.

Thanks in advance.

I have bought several sets of tires from Costco. Price is good, and free flat repair is great.

Only issue is that my truck once needed alignment plus a tire rotation. They would not rotate the tires and put a slightly worn front tire on the rear. Went somewhere else for the rotation and alignment, and that tire was good for another 10k miles.

I've bought probably over a dozen set of Michelins from Costco for my Hondas, my wife's Nissan and, more recently, my old 911.

Service wise, they're very solid. I've only had to replace one tire prematurely due to severe tire damage from foreign object. While they didn't replace it for free, it was pro-rated to the point that the $150 tire only cost be $30-40. No grief.

I've got good access to Costco as you do Discount Tire. I'd go with the one that offers you the best convenience for regular tire rotation.

My dad just did this on their Outback.
Michelin Defenders at Costco were a bit over $800 with road hazard. The same at Discount Tire was over a grand without road hazard.
DT price matched Costco, and had the tires same day vs 2 weeks delay at Costco.

Bought Michelins at Costco, the process was easy, price good, got road hazard included as well as Nitrogen in the tires, most Costco locations also have Nitrogen refill stations for free, and they are well maintained and accurate unlike the abused stations at WaWa....

Costco includes install,

Discount may match them, you'll still be two years less on the RH warranty, but like you said it's not prorated.

Costco also has BG Goodrich, and they run a promotion where you get a $80 off with the purchase of Michelin or Bridgestone tires, you get rotation, balancing, inflation checks, flat repair, and Nitrogen.

The experience at Costco is good, make the appointment, show up, go get a hot dog or pizza and a drink and read up on SF.

If you go wandering those tires could end up $250 more LOL

Just used the free repair yesterday. It happened to coincide with the regular free rotate and balance. Made an appt and walked (and lounged on their furniture) around with the wife for a couple of hours and they paged me when done. We like 'em.

Last four sets we have done the Michelin coupon deal.

I once purchased 2 $500 tires from Costco for a Touareg. They refused to mount them as they should on the constant allwheel drive. I got a refund and drove across the street to Discount Tire and the tires were mounted as I wished. I will never go back to Costco for tires.

Serious question about Road Hazzard warranty. Buy tires from COSTCO (or other retailers). Tire gets damaged and needs replacement. Do you have to go to COSTCO for warranty service, or can you use any tire dealer that sells that brand.

I had a Goodyear tire blow out on my trailer while driving through Tennessee.
I stopped at a Goodyear dealer in Knoxville and they replaced it.

Yes, you just go to Costco forwarrantee service. I have purchased tires there a couple of times.
Ive had one tire patched, and 1 replaced due to road hazard.
They are not the fastest, but didnt give me any grief about fixes.

Pretty easy decision because I have to buy a lot of tires for all my vehicles. Discount Tire. Whatever Costco is offering you, before you buy them there, take the deal to Discount Tire, preferably the manager, and let them match it. I’ve never NOT had them match Tire Rack (before DT owned it) or Costco. There are more Discount Tire brick and mortars than Costcos here. And getting in and out of DT is a hell of a lot easier than Costco which can be an absolute zoo. I get rotations and balances done on at least one vehicle per year and am in good with a DT manager at this point due to all of the above. The manager does all my tire/wheel work, and I tip, and get the best service of my life. Never a mark on any of my wheels and I have aftermarket wheels on all my vehicles.

We buy from Discount tire.

Have bought from Costco and Sam’s Club in the past but, like Prefontaine, posted, Costco is a zoo, same thing at Sam’s. Also never had quick service at Costco or Sam’s.

DT has price matched for us as well. Their service has always been great and there are MANY more locations across the country.

Same here, and only buy from Discount Tire now. When you're on the road away from home, it's a LOT easier to find a DT than a Costco. Having been in this situation the DT guys were great about getting me in quickly and back on the road. Over the last 20 years I think their customer service oriented friendliness and work ethic is better than Costco. (YMMV)

Food for thought that I can't shine light on because I don't know what the Costco road hazard entails, but compare what you get with each company's road hazard. Discount Tire has free flat repair that isn't connected to their certificates, the certificates provide coverage if the tire needs to be replaced rather than repaired.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

It takes the Costco tire shop 5 hours to do anything... The slight difference in price isn't enough for me to want to wait that long. I use Discount Tire as well - fantastic service from DT even when they are super busy.

My BIL had the same experience. COSTCO WOULD NOT SELL him 2 tires for an AWD vehicle. It was "You have to buy four!"

He went elsewhere, no problem.

DT has always been great for me.

I tried to buy a battery at Costco once but got tired of waiting for the salesperson to get done talking on and on forever to the guy in front of me, so off to WalMart.
