Jordan Published 9:46 am CST, Thursday, November 21, 2019 A gun owner was shot and killed while trying to intervene in a pawn shop robbery Wednesday in southwest Houston. Two masked men entered the EZ Pawn store in the 6000 block of Bellaire Boulevard around 7:50 p.m., forcing employees to the ground and rushing to the back of the store, according to the Houston Police Department. The victim, who police said had a concealed handgun license, waited inside for the suspected robbers to return to the front of the store. Once they came to the front, the victim pulled his gun and exchanged gunfire with the two suspects, police said. The victim was struck several times and fell to the floor, according to detectives. Houston police are searching for two armed robbers who shot and killed a gun owner trying to intervene in a pawn shop heist in southwest Houston on Wednesday. The two suspects fled the scene. It is unclear if either of them was shot. Paramedics rushed the injured gun owner to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity was not immediately released. Both suspects are only described as black males in their early to mid-20s, according to detectives. The first suspect was wearing a white jacket with a gray hood, blue sweat pants, white shoes and a black mask. The second suspect was wearing a gray hoodie, red mask, white pants and white shoes. Police are asking anyone with information about the suspects to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477). | ||

In this situation, I'd worry the police would arrive, see him with a gun and shoot him. | |||

The particulars in these situations can vary a good amount. Yes, after a few minutes the Cops may show up, could easily be a mistake. It does sound like he had opportunity to escape, maybe. Don’t know if there were others around, ‘hostages’. His gun didn’t seem all that big or hi-cap either. I’d like to think I’d try to do what made sense at the time, the few seconds one has to formulate a plan. | |||

If the customer had a chance to get the hell out of Dodge safely while the robbery was going down, he definitely made a very poor decision to remain in the store and engage the robbers. Protecting someone's else's property is not a good reason for a civilian to put himself into harm's way. | |||

Not knowing the particulars of that shop, the majority of the ones I've been in required you to be buzzed in & out via electric lock. Possible that he may have been trapped inside. <>< America, Land of the Free - because of the Brave | |||

The man was a longtime vintage guitar dealer in Houston. He was a friend of a friend, but I didn't personally know him. I am posting better video sans the talking head news anchors. I am not sure if the video has been clipped, but if it is in real time, this happened VERY fast. If you watch the 3rd camera angle, it gives a good indication of time, again, if not clipped. It was close quarters and he may not have had time to get out. The other factor I noticed, the lady on the floor gets up as he draws his gun. She was in proximity of his line of fire, possibly causing him to miss. If his shot had hit, it may have saved his life. Anybody that finds themselves in a similar situation, move!, seek cover. There may be the typical brain lag. Is this really happening? Once you realize it is, move! | |||

I think its simple math...two armed BG's versus one armed GG in a store the GG had no responsibility to defend. Given the video immediately above this post, it appears as though had he simply retreated to cover or simply gotten down and posed no threat to the BG's, everyone would still be alive. ----------------------------- Guns are awesome because they shoot solid lead freedom. Fighting the good fight |
Another factor is that most folks who carry guns (including LEOs and concealed carriers) do not practice moving and shooting, seeking cover, etc. Instead, nearly everyone practices on a static range, where they square up to a target in the open, plant their feet, and poke holes in the paper. You revert to your level of training. And in defensive situations, planting your feet while standing in the open will often get you killed. Also notice in TGS's video at the 0:56 mark that the initial shots were fired when the muzzles of their guns were about ~2-3 feet apart, and they were about 10 feet apart from body to body. They fired nearly simultaneously. The good guy's one shot missed, while the bad guy hit the good guy with his first shot and dropped him. Rapid first shot hits tend to carry the day. | |||

The main take aways for us in a scenario such as this: The speed at which it took place. The distances involved when shots were fired. The female clerk was a "wild card" and her actions could not have been anticipated by anyone hoping engage the robbers. Often, there will be multiple opponents. Given the situation, the only viable option would have been to retreat to another area of the store. If that was even possible. Otherwise, go to the floor.
