Hungarian scientists discovered a fifth force that could significantly change physics as it is understood today.

What I read was: "Hungarian scientists may have found a fifth force of nature."

The operative word is MAY.

I read it as "We really think we can justify our next research grant!"

Wasn't the Higgs-Boson supposed to revolutionize our understanding of the universe?

I'm starting to think physicists are just very good salesmen of the unknown and the esoteric.

Real science is very rare these days, nobody will pay for it.

It seems like a number of other teams, at other well known institutions have been trying to disprove it, and have so far failed.

If it did, would you know?

Exactly. A further elaboration might be..."scientists see something they can't explain, understand, or replicate at this point."

Lots of arrogance is also part of that equation.

This article states that they did replicate it, and offered and explanation as well...

Agree that they did repeat it (took 3 years) but the explanation could be as simple as not all atoms/isotopes/particles split at the same angle. This and beryllium 8 might just be oddballs or there are more.

"The study's lead scientist, Attila Krasznahorkay, told CNN that this was the second time his team had detected a new particle...". I read that as they witnessed the phenomenon occur more than once but could not force it to occur. And their explanation is a bit weak by any measure. At any rate, they're a loooooooooooooooong way from proving anything.

I also remember that on more than one occasion, scientists claim to have initiated cold fusion. Unable to duplicate, IIRC.

Damnation, I knew I should have written a paper on the fundamental force I first encountered in 1974.

That fundamental force manifests itself when a male reaches reproductive maturity and a voluptuous female enters their orbit of situational awareness.

It's Elsa.

Sorry for the spoiler, scientists, but I saw Frozen 2 last night. She's the 5th Force.

It was reported by CNN. The article links to a Cornell article. I am on my phone so it would be a real pain to track it further.
